Speedometer Inaccuracy

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by DarR, Apr 23, 2021.

  1. If there is a small irritating thing about all the Ducati bikes I've owned is the inaccurate speedometer.
I really don't buy the argument about the upward bias preventing speeding or infractions thereof.
Riders / drivers that commit speeding infractions do so because they either don't look at their display or disregard it entirely.
I'm just sick of having to rely on the small GPS reading to know my actual accurate speed.
My eye's aren't getting any younger.
Is there a speedometer calibration unit out there that you have known to work with recent Ducati models?

  2. When I had a Triumph Daytona 675 I used my GPS to calculate the percentage inaccuracy of the Speedo. I then used TuneECU (for PC) to correct the Speedo (leaving it 1 mph out). Speedo was always - 1 mph when compared to GPS. I don’t know if TuneECU Android allows the same adjustment. I know JP of JPDiag experimented with speed correction via the ECU in his Writer Software but recommended not using it. I think he was concerned about interference with TCS.

  3. My Speedo is ridiculously accurate at GPS 30 mph I show most 32mph. GPS 90 is about 93 on bike. GPS 145mph is 150 on bike

  4. What do you call inaccurate?

  5. That's a good question.
I would say more than 1% off is unacceptable.

  6. I read somewhere that Ducati’s over read by 8%. Crap if true.

Cars are much more accurate. I once speed tested a Porsche I used to own on a airfield set up with timing beams. I was reading exactly 200mph at the brake marker and was officially timed at 197mph. Not bad.

  7. My old ZX6R used to do 175mph, I was happy with that inaccuracy :joy:

  8. Everyone knows their speedos over read by a few mph. Have a bacon sandwich. Enjoy the view. Throw a stick for the dog.

  9. Don’t Ducati manuals state a 5% difference/over statement? I’m happy they do.

  10. Yeah I’m pretty relaxed about them overeading instead of under.

  11. In the UK, the construction & use section of the Toad Traffic Act, requires the speedo to be type tested and read no less than 27mph and no more than 30mph at a true 30mph for it to be acceptable. Given most sensors read from a rotating part, be it in the gearbox or on the wheel, your true speed will vary with the diameter of your tyre. GPS isn’t 100% accurate so I really cannot see what your issue is. Spend more time looking at the scenery. Andy

  12. How the hell would you keep the thing accurate with tyres that wear on the road then, or the slight difference in size of different makes of tyres? That is a ridiculous expectation.

  13. In which case I think you’re very unrealistic. Too many variables: tyre size, sprockets, throttle movements. GPS is only as good as the packet frequency, satellite connection, weather conditions, processing speed. Even in telematics businesses 5% is an allowable tolerance due to the potential variables.

  16. Yes 100% it does state that:upyeah:

  17. Both our car and Jeep speedometer are accurate and in sync with their onboard GPS and an external Garmin.
I can't see why Ducati would be any different.

  18. GPS 145 on the road is no license or bike to ride.:)
My Puch maxi was clocked at 36 in a 30 zone down hill. I was a born rebel! The motorcycle Policeman said I was a naughty boy, a very naughty boy. Never broke a speed limit since, 46 years ago now. I am a good boy, a very good boy.

  19. So you tested one car that you used to own and now you are assuming that all cars are more accurate? Not a chance, they also have tyres that wear.

  20. I’m assuming fuck all mate... I think you’re the Mr. Assume round here ;)
