Strange one this, was out for a couple of hours on Sunday so the bike was nice and warm, just filled up with the good stuff. Accelerated out of the petrol station then had to brake very very heavily to a stop. Bike spluttered, mis fired, revved through then spluttered and cut out. Oil smoke from the exhaust. Pulled over and tried to fire her up, engine spun freely but won't fire, still burnt oil smoke from the exhaust......flatten battery and RAC home. Opinion is the very heavy braking caused oil into the barrels and fouled the plugs .....any thoughts anyone ? Bike was spot on up to then...............a bit baffled, hoping to leave parked up for a week and try to start her up.
They are made for heavy breaking. I keep my fingers crossed that you are right but I wouldn't put money on it.
Might sound daft but you haven't put Diesel in by mistake have you? Never heard of hard braking putting oil into the barrels before, is this a known Ducati thing? If it were me and bearing in mind the petrol stop I would drain the tank and flush through with fresh petrol before attempting to start her up again. You could remove a plug to check for fouling.
That does sound like a fill up with diesel when oil and smoke out of the exhaust is mentioned. Dip your finger in the tank and smell it, does it feel oily? You’ll soon know if it’s diesel. Most of us have done it at some stage, I did it with my old boxer BM, as said above, drain everything out of the tank and fuel lines that you can, fill with fresh fuel and also I bought a can of Ezestart and give a good squirt into the airbox, it’ll fire and probably stall a few times and have your street full of smoke, but keep up with the Ezestart until it pulls fresh Fuel through and runs without stalling.. good luck
First thoughts was diesel but it was£1. 35/ litre , RAC man checked it out as well. I think I'll drain it and start again. I'd go back to the garage but its 60 miles away. Fuel seems to be the suspect to be fair.....going to check again , more I think about it........ I'll let you know how I get on., thanks
Personaly, ezestart is the last thing i would be squirting into my engine ,i have heard a few stories of people buggering up their engines with enthusiastic use of it ,it is a highly explosive mixture and too big a does of it could knock out a bearing etc.
So the diesel is about out ( knob head ) and fresh petrol in with a drop of Redex, been turning the motor over a 3/4 throttle to flush it through. Battery back on charge and will try again tomorrow. Is this approach likely to work or do I need to get a of professional help to get the plugs and fuel filter changed. I don't have the tools or space to strip her down at home.
Has it fired up yet, or have you not tried that? I would see if it fires up and runs, or tries to run..wouldn’t worry about plugs or fuel filter as they’ll get clean when the fresh petrol draws through I would think?
I keep spinning the motor for as long as the battery lasts, not fired up yet. I'm thinking it's going to take a few days of trying that plan. Worst case is I'll need a new battery! Still kicking myself......
I'd say it's easily done but..... . At the end of the day this is a lot better than a broken engine. If only they made bike fuel fillers the same than petrol cars, the diesel nozzle wouldn't fit.
Just wondering why you're spinning the motor over & over? If you've drained the fuel from the tank you've only got what's in the lines to the injectors. My guess is that you'd be better off trying to have it running (spluttering) to get shot of that, and the fresh fuel will dilute the last bit... Or have I misunderstood what's going on?
A lot of suggestions, ffs don’t use ezzee start, if your not sure take it in and pay the cost of a mistake, good luck.
The plan worked, after a few minutes spinning the motor a smokey fire up happened. Running as sweet as now. Still feel a dick for doing it but hey ho.........., thanks for all the comments, much appreciated
Frankly, I think you’ve got off lightly on this forum you absolute muppet! ...I did it once but it was putting diesel in a Ford Sierra.
You crack on and fill your boots if you fancy using it ,it is way, way more volatile than petrol ,otherwise why do you think it works
