749 Sprag Change

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Penfold, Jun 29, 2016.

  1. Gonna be changing the sprag in my 749.

I have never done one before so have researched how to do it following various guides on here I think I can do the job.

One thing I cant find is what torque the nut that holds the fly wheel (the 30mm one) need to be when reassembling. Also what Loctite do I need to secure it further? I have everything else I need (I think) so should be good to go.

    Thanks in Advance

  2. Have you got a method to hold the crank?
From memory it's something like 250nm. But I'd need to check the manual. Oh and I used 272 loctite. Which will make it fun to get off again.

  3. lol I have got something to hold the crank so no worries there, I have found that loctite 423 is recommended but will look at the 272. Am looking for the torque in the manual but i cant find it.. blind as feck lol

I'm guessing this is the torque i need..256nm min 284nm max 270nm rec

  5. Yep that's the one I used. (270)
    Which is feckin tight!
Don't be tempted by the penny in the gears trick. It puts massive loads trough the bearings and is bad practice. Good luck.

  6. Penny in the gears is bad but the clutch holding tool is worse . The flywheel needs to be held or you risk fracturing the crankshaft with any twist at all .

  7. I was going to use the clutch tool.... what do you suggest then?

  8. If your near Northampton you can loan my kit.

  9. Hold the flywheel side as ducati2242 said.
I have a modified alternator rotor with a bloody big bar through it.
