Hi all, has anyone played with there sprockets on the 1198??? I remember years ago on my TL1000R i took one tooth off the front and went up one at the back, i know the 1198 is insane anyway, but just wondered if its worthwhile???? also what is the standard gearing???? thanks. Danny
So before you do anything measure the ride height first, centre of the rear spindle straight up to a fixed marked point on the seat or subframe. the 1198 is front 15 and rear 38...............it is a well documented issue that you cant really go much bigger on the rear sprocket possibly add one more tooth to 39 but the chain run can rub on the swingarm so you are better going down to 14 on the front although you may have to shorten the chain length so you dont run out of adjustment moving the eccentric back, although the bonus is a slightly longer wheel base which is good. Dont forget after to adjust your ride height with the tie rod length to get it back to where you started. A lower geared bike will lose a little top end but its worth it to get the bike smoother at lower speeds ie in town.
Worth dropping a tooth on an 848 IMO. I tried this on my 1098 and it made the bike way too busy IMHO and went back to the stock settings. A front sprocket is very cheap, if you have tools give it a go for yourself...
