SS carby battery??

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by 470four, Nov 1, 2012.

  1. Hi all, looking for a new battery for my SS, the leadacid that it currently carries is flagging & I dont trust it to spin my twin over this Winter...

I dont want another leadacid as having a few litres of acid above EVERYTHING gives me the jeebies.

Would LIKE one of the diminutive Shorai batts, more for the weight-saving than anything else? 3kg lighter? 270 CCA aint to be sniffed at either.... not keen on the price, or that you can't smart/trickle charge them?

    CARROT CYCLES - SHORAI LFX18L1-BS12 (18AH 12V) (CASE SIZE 1)

Looking at the Motobatt MB16AU, 20amps, plus 230CCA? The other alteranative would be the Ballistic, any others I have missed?

  2. I have had a Gel Bty in mine for the last 3 years, has never let me down, it was bought from Germany (whilst i lived there) fo about £40 will give the details of it once the sun is about.

    I can't recomend them enough.

Also mine lives on an optimate with no ill effects

  3. I put a Motobatt MBT12B4 in my 999. Well made with good quality terminals, 2yr g'tee. I would class it at the higher end of budget batteries, better than the exide it replaced. Only had it a few months so can't comment on life. I take my batteries indoors during cold weather, as -temps kill them.

  4. I'm after a Battery as well and want a sealed type

EVO2 12-cell, another cells-width wider, 410CCA??! not sure if this will fit in the std.battery slot though... I think Pab has an 8-cell in his S/light?

  6. No fancy batteries on mine......just a cheapy lead acid job........

Charged it twice in three years, topped up once...........Only charged it because I was tracing wiring faults.....even that process has been eased by putting a isolator switch in the fuel pump circuit.

  7. Looking at the Ballistic 8-cell's, trying to find a UK dealer? Failing that will have to USPS one from the States?

All the benefits of the Shorai at nearly half the price, 4.5 kilos LESS than the standard battery??!

Thats a good weight loss off the top of the bike! :)

  8. I have the Motobatt on the 916, it is slightly larger than the Yuasa so I had to make a new bracket but it spins it over faster with less chance of a 'kick-back' and can do so for longer, it is also heavier (although not much) but I'm happy with a trouble-free battery that has the extra reserve if required and I'm prepared to put up with the extra weight for that security.

I liked it so much I've bought one for the Monster, for the same reasons - I'm not sure the old bikes are well suited to a lightweight race battery, especially if they have been high-comp'd.

BTW Mad4bikes sell them cheaper direct than on ebay... :upyeah:

  9. Motobatt for me. Had one on the SS and now have one on the 749. Easier to crank and holds it's charge better after cranking.

  10. Only thing holding me back on the Motobatt is the weight? Had tea and biscuits with Steve B earlier, suggested fitting a 14amp Motobatt instead - would be the same weight or less as the standard battery plus with the 20% extra beef would put out the same output?

Hmmmm.... weather is pants at the mo anyways, couldnt ride the thing even if I did get a new battery lol

  11. Yeah, it is weightier than acid/oem batt but you can offset it up by not eating biscuits for a bit! Unless you're racing or going for a ultralight project, I doubt you'd notice it.

  12. True... dieting is about as much fun as nailgunning my scrotum to a cactus though.

Quite enjoy a little MiniXmas when the postie brings me more FILTH for my bike?

  13. 'tis probably about the difference between having a good 'turnout' before riding. I appreciate lightweight components as much as the next man but there are somethings that are best left substantial...

  14. The Ballistic 8-cell is nearly 4.5 kilos lighter than the standard lead-acid!

That would have to be one ring-stretching almighty shit! :upyeah:

  15. Had a quick measure of my spare battery/airbox earlier, Im thinking the 12-cell Ballistic would fit, given a little work? Will check tomorrow when I lift the tank up and check the clearances etc...

410CCA should spin it over a treat. :upyeah:

  16. Shit a brick! (or two).

  17. There's websites for that! (apparently)

Will make a few measurements tomorrow AM, am keen on the 12-cell at the mo? TWICE the CCA of the lead-acid, I will gain a kilo with the Motobatt and lose 4.5 with the 12-cell, £-for-pound you dont get better than that.

  18. Sounds good (the battery not the 'website') be interested to hear how it goes.

Slightly O/T but I bought a new battery today for my car; 800 CCA - would definitely spin a Ducati engine over nicely, unfortunately it wouldn't fit under your tank as it is about the size (and weight when full of fuel) of your tank...
