SSIE conversion for a carby SS...

  1. Right.

Not happy with my CV38's, they are GOOD - but not great... Long manifolds, poor breathing at high revs, poor throttle response, the list goes on...

FCR's - expensive, excitable little monkeys with a reputation for peeing petrol everywhere and/or filling your crankcases with fuel. Splits would be even more expensivererer, but would have short manifolds - still in the way of a hot-running vert pot?

It has been deemed a possible good idea on here:

    (page 3)

    - that retrofitting the Injection system from an IE SS or similar would cut out any need for balancing carbs, choke faff, have short manifolds, give good fueling at high AND low revs, self adjust as per hot/cold running & generally be MUCH less fking around than what carbs are?

What I need to know is what parts I would need to complete said swap, and any possible problems?

I will drop this useful quote from Steve in as a starting point, I am well versed in the ways of the carby but the IE side of things is all new! No technimijargon please...

    Questions:

How big, size-wise, are the IE throttle bodies?

How difficult would it be to implant an IE ECU? Is this do-able as an add-on or would I need the whole IE loom?

Would I need O2 sensors in the exhaust?

What the hell is a pc3, an 1.5m or a 16m?? Im thinking a breakers or similar with a crashed IE would be good so we could salvage all need parts from the bike at once?

  2. 2, if you use a 15m ecu it bolts to the airbox like were the ignitor units fit on a carby, you will need to mount the coils(IE 916 996 888 and so on) on the frame by the engine, use S steel p clips.

So the best option for ease is also use a SSie loom and handle bar switch's which only leaves you to mod the front loom to fit your clocks idiot lights and the tail light etc.
    3, No o2 sensor needed

4 power commander or get CJS to flash the 1.5m ecu

  3. Always good answers from Imola!

What is the difference between the carby h/bar switches and the IE ones?

I take it the 750 ecu will work fine with 900 injectors etc? Im thinking the 900 would have bigger throttle bodies?

So basically I need ALL the electrics off an IE?

  4. Or you could graft an ST2 lump in, complete with loom. Buy a cheap damaged tank and graft the fuel fitting onto your SS tank?

  5. Connector blocks different.. IE 916 ST 996 etc all will fit.

All TB's on are same size throats even 900 are the same, but i think 620 ones have a restrictor.
You can use 750ecu but it will need re flashing for 900 fueling or fit a PC3

  6. Bit more hassle but a st2 loom and 1.6m ecu will be cheaper and the 1.6m has a eprom chip unlike a 15m

  7. ST2 looks to be the way to go then?

Bit bummed as Steve B has just sold the important bits of his ST... :frown:

  8. Could work? Happy to keep my carby lump and bodywork tho, never been keen on the IE clothes?? :upyeah:

Hmmm the radiator could keep temps down, 944 too...

  9. I originally was doing the st2 lump into carby SS frame.

It will work BUT you need to modify/cut the frame because of the water cooling manifolds on side of vertical head hit's the trellis.

  10. A couple of dinky rads wouldn't look much different to oil coolers :upyeah:

  11. If you use a ST loom you will need to mount the 16m ecu under the seat, Also you just need to use one of temp sensors in its loom.
Also need a IE fuel pump to fit inside your tank, Lot's of pumps fit from cars including the map sensor, temp sensor, etc oh and the pickup is off a fiat 1.7ie punto.

  12. Looks like I need a donor ST2 - anybody?

  13. ask Chris on here who bought Steve B's st2 engine and all running gear ?
    He owns a 851 now..............

  14. Bottom end of an ST2 is virtually the same as a 900SS, only significant differences are the longer (cam pulley) shaft to drive the water pump, the left-hand crankcase cover, alternator/flywheel and ignition pickups - all of which could be modified easily to fit to a 900SS (except the water pump drive shaft - but you won't need that).

It would be fairly simple to fit the neccessary parts to an SS engine or fit SS cylinders/heads to ST2 crankcase for a fuel injected air-cooled engine.

Not sure it's a 'better' bike than an FCR'd 900, then I might be biased as I've spent alot of time & money building such a beast, but I wanted to go 'old-school' on this one...

  15. LOL would this indicate he has no need of the ST2 gubbins?

Im not after out&out power, just a better-running more reliable carby? (carbIE??)

  16. Why not just put carb'y bodywork on an SSie ....... or would that be too simple !

  17. Ummm that would cost me another bike?

I would then have a carby with an ie engine, and an IE with a carby engine etc? FCR's would be cheaper? :upyeah:
