My SF is my first bike with a sss, and I just don't feel comfortable leaving it on the paddock stand (the type that enters from one side). Has anyone ever had a bike fall from one of these? Considering getting the bungs so I can use a double sided paddock stand.
Get a decent quality stand with a bearing mounted pin and it'll be safe as houses. Never had a faller.
Until I bought a paddock stand from a bloke at Brands Hatch I'd never come across one that by turning a knob on the pin you expanded an 'O' ring in the axle and thereby attaching the stand to the bike. Been servicing the slipper clutch on and off over the last few days and I don't know how I managed to move the bike around the garage without one before, it's great and a hell of a lot easier when you are working on your own. Never had problem with SSSA stands feeling unsafe and unstable. I use stands from Ducati and T-Rex, and I use them a lot on different bikes. One time at technical training at Ducati, the instructor showed us how to calibrate the gear indicator on a Diavel. He sat on the bike, on paddock stand, with the bike on a bike lift, and drove the bike thru all the gear's.. So yes, SSSA stand's are safe
Some of the cheaper stands are unsafe and sag in the centre because the tubing is not strong enough. When they sag the wheels on the stand also don't align correctly and therefore the whole bike rocks slightly from side to side whilst on the stand. I use Gubellini stands front and rear as they are totally solid and you are safe to even sit on the bike with it on the stand. These stands are also used by Ducati and are sold under the Ducati Performance name. Each stand has a serial number so if you ever have problems it can be identified from it's production batch. You won't get better but they are not cheap, buy once and be safe. I have several stands including the one mentioned that has the O rings in them and they are fine as long as you only use them for just supporting the bike and no more, too much abuse and the buckle quite easily.
My SF lived on that stand over winter with no problems at all Prior to that I had my Monsters all overwintering on Ducati and R&G track stands with no issues. Since moving to the Tuono which uses bobbins I actually prefer the SS stands over regular track stands. As long as you have a 1/2 decent quality stand, which you do, I wouldn't worry about it.
My stand comes with a tapped m8 hole. I put a long stud and fat washer wheelside and hand tighten it. Ive had my 916 fall off. Albeit my own fault, quickly spinning rear wheel oiling my chain and never noticed it moving but I was in a hurry after the chain on my drz400 snapped overtaking a lorry m25 riegate hill. I decided to take the day off after the bike fell off stand. fate was telling me not to go to work.
I know the feeling well, though it is the inverse for me; I dont trust the traditional bobbins mount stands over my old single pin type!!! I keep the sidestand down on the Tuono even when its up on the trackstand.
Had the same problem as Boots when using the origional Ducati fixed shaft one. It was bend ever so slightly the wrong way. Now have one with a rotating shaft and wheels so it can be pushed around on the front and rear stand. So yeah, it can happen but unlikely if you're not being stupid like I was. I had mine ticking over in gear to oil the chain.
Ive had a bike fall off a front stand with no front wheel in and a sss rear stand, luckily the fork bottoms fell onto a carpeted floor and rear stand stayed exactly where it should have so no damage done. I have an aluminium motrax stand and it is a really nice bit of kit. Motrax went bust but Demon Tweeks now sell a suspiciously identical one which I can recommend.
Just don't lube your chain whilst turning the wheel by hand without checking that the bike's not working it's way off the stand. Otherwise it might fall off the other side, onto your car, bending the tank stay, breaking the RH mirror and scratching the car... :Grumpy:
I got away with clip on, mirror, lock stop tang, and middle fairing. No damage to tank tho. Phew. I now ALWAYS screw the long stud from wheel side in 1st. Unless I am removing the wheel, then after. You only ever do this once. (if you do it more than that well....)
Just as a matter of interest why would someone make and sell a SSS paddock stand that was unsafe? They wouldn't last long if they did.
I have a ducati stand and also a Harris paddock stand The Harris stands have retractable jaws, SO.....................if you have cotton reeels in your rear hub the standard harris stand will fit. They're a great piece of kit !
