ST2 not chargeing

  1. Hi All.

My charge light comes on and have checked the following items : Battery, full charge. Rectifier has been replaced with high grade Eletric's type item and moved to under the headlight. Checks show its OK. The stator does not give out any Voltage when running and does not show any increase at the battery.Which had 12.9 volts before started and starts to drop. Had a workshop manual on disc but this has gone missing since a move of house ?

Can anyone help sort this problem before I waste money on things not needed.Checked all wires and cleaned all connecters etc. Where can I download a manual for this model which is a 1997 ST2 with SINGLE fase stator, only 2 yellow wires.

    Cheers RichardG

I'd say there is your problem. Stator windings cooked. Measure between each yellow wire & earth for a short. Then Take the alternator cover off and have a look at it. Brown/black n toasty = fooked

  3. Thanks to Manga, can you tell me what tool is needed to remove the stator case and stator ??

  4. Agree, if there is no voltage out of the stator then either its duff or you are not measuring it correctly. Assuming that if you have got this far you are measuring it correctly then the answer is duff alternator.

  5. I seem to remember reading somewhere that early ST2 with the 'big' single-phase alternator were quite prone to alternator failure?

I assume that's one reason it was later changed to a 3-phase but not sure if this can be retrofitted to older bikes?

If it helps I have a 'surplus to requirements' left-side case with alternator & water pump for a single-phase ST2...
