Gents 99 ST2 that's been left to rot for at least 3 years in the elements, runs as rough as a badgers arse. Swapped out the two relays under the seat and the little one to the back left of the subframe (fuel??) And cleaning/inspecting every connector block/relay that is encountered. But, it's only firing on the rear cylinder and perhaps intermittently on the front, if at all. Plugs are new but front cylinder/header is only warm to the touch even after 4-5 minutes running. We've swapped both coil and leads over and they both produce a spark on the rear cylinder but not from the front powered coil. Front plug is at least getting wet. Which leaves me to suspect coil pick up sensor?? Are they prone to failure on one side only? Clutching at straws.... Does anyone know if a sensor off any other models will fit or are they model/year specific, as we're trying to keep costs to a minimum so hoping to find one from a breakers or similar. Eternally grateful for any words of wisdom. We have matches, thanks.
Top tip - check the big multi-pin connector on the left-hand side of the steering head. The pins in there corrode and cause all sorts of odd things to happen. Check the multi-pin on the side of the ECU too... Failing that, get a wiring diagram and work backwards from the coil. Without a diagram you really are working in the dark...
Thanks JR - Checked all of the above and didn't make a blind bit of difference, but it is nice to know that they are now all good for the foreseeable future. Transpires the ecu was shot so duly replaced and now seems to run well. Regarding the ecu we're not entirely sure what has happened exactly but a couple of guesses include being left to rot outside for 3-4 years and a degree of corrosion had entered the internals of the ecu itself, green fur viewed from the chip cover. The ecu hole pins when viewed up to the light could be barely seen, perhaps not allowing any water/condensation ingress to evaporate when the weather turned warmer. Check your pins!! We were wondering whether it had a set of jump leads across it at some point and spiked it but this is purely guess work. Either way it was mullered. The pick up sensor was a red herring. New problems include a sticking front brake master cylinder and fork seals/oil are suspect (unsurprisingly). Anyone know if seals can be had from ktm? I seem to recall DUK/Brembo don't like people messing with their cylinders. Any other source would be good? Somewhere in the states? Finally, as neither of us have swapped out the oil or seals on the usd showas how easy/difficult is it? Any thing to be wary of, or just get stuck in and have the tops off and learn as we're going along. Cheers.
