Getting ready for a trip and trying to nail fuel range. The gauge on the bike seems very inaccurate - from light on empty I managed to put in 16L (3.5 Gal). At that point the gauge read full on the bars but only showed 4.2 Gal in the tank. I had brimmed it at the pump. According to the gauge I am getting 55 mpg I understand the tank to have 5.5 Gal capacity Is the gauge nototiously inaccurate? Is there anyway to improve the accuracy? What are peoples experiences regarding light coming on and correlation between the gauge bars and the actual Gallons shown? Thanks
The gauge is pretty much non linear, so the thing is, that by the time it gets through the first half on the gauge, it's actually gone through 2/3rd of regular fuel supply, as opposed to reserve, when the light is on. Around the 50mpg mark in cruise is spot on. Best thing to do is use it conjunction with the trip meter. Not sure on the ST3, but the 4s has a 21 litre tank, with 15l normal supply and 6 in reserve (from light on). A
I have found the trip meter on my ST3 to be extremely inaccurate. The MPG is usually around 20% optimistic. Could this be anything to do with me running a 14 tooth front sprocket? Just a thought. As for the fuel gauge, I think it is a case of if you brim it, then you take it over the max height of the sensor in the tank, so it stays full on the gauge longer initially, but if definitely moves down faster as fuel drops, as it is definitely non linear. The best I have managed on a long distance run, with the odd 100+ mph blat to relieve boredom, is 50mpg, with about a 180 mile range. I am sure with a steady 70mph, I should get 200 miles plus out of a tank - more if I revert to a 15 tooth sprocket on front.
Yep fuel warning light comes on after approx 15 or 16 litres has been used, then you know you have max of 50 miles left, normally get 175 miles with at least a 2 or 3 litres left
