Hello fellow Ducatisti I have 2005 ST3 which has recently started popping from the exhaust when closing the throttle and also seems to heat up faster in stationary traffic !! So I changed the air filter and spark plugs and although the popping is a little less there is still something not quite right - the engine temp is fine on the move but can creep up quick fast to 90*C in stationary traffic ... and given that it is not exactly warm outside this is unusal !! .. Was thinking it might the valve clearances ( last done in May 2017 ) but any ideas, comments or suggestions would be welcome
I have an ST3 and it will pop when hot BUT it has Ducati Perfomance exhausts and chip and so it's not at all standard! But a few years ago my ST2 (which is standard) did pop on the overrun a bit. I never paid much attention but when it was MoTed, the tester did notice an air leak where one of the silencers met a down pipe. He pushed it all back together and its been fine since. It still failed the MoT on something else! So, it may just be a leak in the exhaust somewhere.
I would say temp is ok and would could gomup to 105? Popping could be a little air leak, nothing terrible.
90* should actually be no problem at all. The fact that our bikes tend to run cool on the open road makes us panic when we hit traffic and the temp rapidly climbs as air ceases to flow as rapidly through the radiator. Ducatis tend to have fans that come on after 100*, I assume to allow any water in the oil to escape as steam. If the temp continues to climb after the fans have come on, then that is the time to start to worry but anything up to circa 125 should do no real harm. A combination of pressurisation and coolant mix will stop the coolant boiling until about 128 degrees. When the coolant boils is when you definitely need to stop and switch off. If it’s any comfort, normal running temp for my 320d is 100 degrees and it never varies.
Good looking bike, welcome to the forum. I'm sure you well be reminded of the DB law on introducing yourself properly soon.
Hi Michel Thanks for your suggestion and this could well be it !! Do you know how to actually check for an air leak ?
I luckily managed to source the Nonfango rack and it connects on to the rear indicator's bar on the underside of the fairing ..hopefully the pics will help
Cheers! So much better than the hash i was looking at, but these rails are like rocking horse poo to find
