I am fitting a new battery & thought that I might as well uprate my cables to the starter solenoid, starter motor and earth at the same time. As the existing engine earth is quite difficult to access (see pic attached) and ive been told is often very tight and difficult to undo, I am proposing a new solution. I plan to fit my new positive & negative cables, leaving the originals in place - thinking that more copper should be even better for starting? (see the new PINK lines on shown on the wiring diagram attached). In addition I plan to use the capcscrew shown in the attached pictures as my new second earth. HAVE ANY OF YOU GUYS/GALS PERFORMED THIS UPGRADE LEAVING THE ORIGINAL WIRING IN PLACE & WITH A NEW EARTH LOCATION??? Your comments appreciated
More cable = lower resistance = better current flow = (in theory) better starting... Just make sure all the connections are clean and protected from corrosion, or you will be wasting your time.
Cheers Guys - It will be a new battery & I will use battery grease on all connections & get them tight. No issues with running two wires in parallel - leaving the old ones on then?
Thanks JR45 - my understanding also - why remove the old wires when they might still help alongside the new larger cables. I will hopefully complete this work over the weekend
New Battery & Wires Fitted I finatlly Fitted my new Bosch battery and heavy duty starter leads. I also connected up a fused Optimate charger lead and ran the wire to an accessible point away from the fairings. Here are some pictures of my new installation. All the old lead (wires) remain in place. I have already noticed the improvement in starting - Wow what a difference - Recommend this modification to all
