Is this the correct location of the terminals on the ST4s? Negative at the rear, positive at front, both on the inboard edge, towards the engine. I replaced the battery that came with the bike with the same type, just wondering if it's the right battery? I wanted to fit the negative exact start direct to the battery terminal, rather than the wee extension, but the cable wouldn't fit between the ecu and battery - it might if the battery post was on the outboard edge. The cable is a bit tight, but I reckon it's because I've used a higher mounting point (the ST4s engine and battery tray are fitted to my 888). Also, the positive cable is a bit bulky/obtrusive, again I wondered if it was designed for an outboard battery post, but maybe again I should use the wee extension?
My ST4 battery is mounted like that battery terminals inboard. Last time I had it off for belts I couldn't remember but it was the only way it woild go on
That's the correct location for the battery terminals. Looks like someone has removed the fabric tape from the ECU connectors. I'd cover these, where they go into the connectors, with self-amalgamating tape to seal the entry and keep the weather out.
Not sure what year yours is but mine is 2002. +1 on terminal location +1 on the ECU wires get thoes covered, may want to check no damage has been done to the ECU pins too Earth point is different to mine which is close to the oil breather. Maybe its additional Wheels don't look standard either
Thanks for the replies, away to order some self-amalgamating tape, now that I know what it’s called; I took the old tape off when replacing the damaged multi-pin plugs. I’ll see if I can find an alternative point for the earth attachment on the 888 frame, or a different route for the cable. It does fit, it’s just not that neat a fit.
You would be best to connect the battery earth to the engine rather than the frame so that there is a path of least resistance to the starter. The earth point for the ST4s is at the back of the clutch housing, toward the top of the engine and it's OEM button head hex is awkward to get into but replacing it with a hex head screw is a big improvement.
