Near-mint Ducati ST4S 2001 with Ducatisti owner for 15 years 996 engine with Ohlins, Brembos and fitted luggage £3500 with standard exhausts, with first refusal on extras listed below You may not have considered an ST, but they're some of Ducati's finest efforts. Described as 'one of the most balanced and effective bikes I have ever had the pleasure of riding' by Neil Spalding, MotoGP commentator and proprietor of Sigma Performance. The 4S was the pinnacle combining the 996 4-valve engine with all-day comfort and Ohlins suspension. Supremely torquey even 2-up yet returning a consistent 55mpg, with a 220+ mile range. The Ducatis of this time (under TPG management) had excellent finish and quality control. The few known quirks of the ST have been fully sorted during 15 years of cherished ownership making this one of the best available for sale today. Low miles but used frequently, it did 1600 miles in 6 days recently, trouble-free, and wants for nothing. I'd love to keep it but these days cannot tour as much as I used to. This has been my ultimate all-rounder of a bike, replacing my long-term 916 and a VFR. Standard features: 996 engine: real-world torque and efficiency Ohlins shock and Ti-nitrided Showa forks (stanchions like new) Marchesini wheels (also like new) fitted with Michelin Pilot Road tyres Brembo brakes with HH pads, all pistons smooth Carbon rear hugger/chainguard Included extras: Ducati matching side panniers, good capacity but well tucked-in Ducati Performance 52L topbox and rack, takes 2 full-face helmets Odyssey PC680 battery Sidestand bypass wiring (allows engine to run with the stand down, but stops if placed into gear with the stand still down) Progrip 714 grips, comfy slight barrel shape Oberon clutch and brake caps Full service history, supplied by Chris Clarke Ducati, looked after by Carl Harrison (Norfolk Ducati legend) then Moto-R Ducati specialist. Recent valve service (all rockers good, the engine is always warmed up before riding). ECU replaced (common fault) with Monster S4 item, flashed with the latest standard ST4S map. Kevlar belts on 2y now, will go one more year or can be replaced as part of the sale. Long MoT, 24 Apr 2024 Known issues/quirks sorted: Standard seat repadded with gel (better than standard, better than the Sargent I used to have) Higher spec Odyssey battery, PC680, with Optimate charger lead fitted Sidestand wiring kit allowing it to run whilst on the stand in neutral, same as the later models 14T front sprocket (the standard 15T gives way too high gearing) Quiet clutch mod (stack height adjusted for silence, with mild cymbals when lever is pulled) Original documentation, both black keys and red key all present Security: Alphadot marking, Spyball alarm (currently disconnected) Optional extras (not fitted but available at extra cost): Ducati Performance badged carbon exhausts, lovely sound Ducati Performance soft bags which exactly fit into the panniers Red cordura Oxford compact tankbag with map/gps pocket Bespoke soft waterproof cover by Specialised Covers Priced at £3500 with the standard exhaust fitted, as shown at the start of the video. Thanks for reading.
Beautiful looking bike, my first Ducati was an ST4, absolutely loved it and was very sad when it was time to replace it and Ducati had dropped the ST range. I wish I could clean and keep my bikes to that standard. GLWS
Probably my favourite bike I had. I would jump at this one, but bad neck now dictates more upright posture. It’s a beautiful bike you have there, I’m jealous someone is going to get it.
Brian, though they might never fully appreciate the favor given, you have saved someone endless headaches with that ECU replacement. In many ways this is the ultimate bike for sport touring if one finds the BMW's a bit "ponderous." I have two ST4S's
It's a real pity that the ST range was dropped. Fantastic bikes but I'm possibly a bit biased Sadly the "Ducati Performance badged carbon exhausts" are just that. Carbon exhausts with badges on them. They've got BS/AU marks on them so were almost definitely made in the UK and have had DP stickers added...... As for the ECU, yes, having spent the best part of 2 years trying to fathom starting issues on mine before we discovered the problem with the ECU I can confirm that you've really done the next owner a favour there. Best of luck with the sale.
Yes. A bit of a faff but several in the FB ST group have had Ducati UK confirm emissions in writing and then had them added to the ULEZ exemption list.
On the ECU, reflashing a new Monster S4 unit was a solution costing less than £400, whereas a direct replacement ECU would be much more if you could find one. Also, the '01 map is best replaced with the latest map available, as mine has. Carbon exhausts, yes indeed, I bought those knowing they were just badges as such, and of unknown manufacturer. All I can say is thay everything is in fine shape after a decade on my bike, with 44mm OD stainless tubing following the same curve as standard; the cans are 110mm and 400mm long with a 50mm internal tube with removable baffle. Unlike chambered silencers, those dimensions and quality of materials are all pretty much all there is to know about a pair of absorption-type carbon cans, whomever made them.
A video with the ST4S running on both standard and aftermarket exhausts is available here https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2007421579598076/
Such a great bike, very tempting. But I do remember the tennis elbow I used to get from the ST2 I had. Was so easy to ride fast even two up, and did about 10k miles in the year I had mine.
The riding position suits me well, it's pretty much that of a VFR, a Triumph ST and doubtless others. Quite a few owners, in the US in particular, have raised the bars a little with Helibar and other kits.
I love ST4's, i owned the same bike at 2 seperate times when i realised i should not have sold it the first time and spent years trying to buy it back. I wish they still had a bike as good as this in their range. They dont. I have never heard this ECU issue though, that is news. The tiny running glitch i had with mine the first time i owned it was cured by Nelly.
The reason you haven't heard of it as an ST4 owner is that it related to the 2001 ST4S, totally different ECU to that on the ST4.
Was it just the 2001 or were all the old-shape 4S bikes affected? I feel quite fortunate to have found the NOS Monster ECU for a reasonable sum (£150 direct from Italy) onto which we could load the correct map to solve the problem.
