ST4S starting problems

  1. Sometimes when I press the starter button I just get a click, on my last proper ride out I stalled it and then it wouldn't start for about half an hour.
Battery seems good, I get between 12.5 to 13 volts depending when I check it. I thought it was the starter solenoid as its symptoms are similar to those when my 750s had a duff solenoid. However I have fitted a new starter solenoid today, I am still getting the click on some presses of the button. Any thoughts guys?
Although it has always started I don't want to get stranded somewhere in Europe when I'm on the way to WDW!

  2. TBH, that still sounds like the solenoid, if the battery is good.

Try bypassing the solenoid. Disconnect the battery earth and then wire the solenoid connections direct to the starter. Then, earth the battery and see if it turns over easily. If it does, there's your answer.

I had a starter solenoid go and it was the same thing.

  3. Have a good look at the 2-pin connector the female pins in the
plug can some times splay out and give a poor connection you might
need to close them up a bit.

  4. Thanks guys. Ascalon you coould be right but I can't believe that a brand new solenoid is going to give exactly the same issues as the previous one! Brian I did close up the pins in the plug because they felt a bit loose.
When the bike starts it is sometimes a bit laboured and sometimes it will start with a short press of the button. When its turning over I know it will eventually start. The problem seems to get worse if the bike stalls. After a stall it just does not seem to want to re-start, thats when I just get a click on the button! its as if something is jamming and not alowing it to turn over. The first time it happened i thought it might be a stuck starter motor so I rocked it in gear, but this was in vain. Eventually it seems to kick back into life but it is frustrating in the mean time.

  5. If you just jump the starter, do away with the button/solenoid/ignition you
will narrow it down to just the starter(might just need a brush kit) or the dreaded sprag clutch.

  6. Earthing issue?
Try a jump lead from the battery neg. to the engine earth point(by the r/h footrest) & see if that improves things on the starter.
Failing that try jumping it by a jump lead from the battery positive to the connection on the starter motor itself.

Ducati starter cables are not known for their ability to age well. ;) Check & clean all connections.
