Hi, my 749 needed a new fuel pump relay, so I bought one. then I got fed up scrabbling around on the floor and bought a bike lift, big mistake, as I can now see how corroded everything is and how paint is missing from the engine. The rear end is now stripped down with all small parts having been stripped and plated, I have a black Samco hose kit waiting to go on but I have now convinced myself to drop the engine and paint it. Can anyone recommend an engine stand to do this on, I have seen a nice one on the interweb, which is two bent tubes, which would be ideal as I will want to be painting it on the bench, rather than a floor-mounted stand.
Something like this… https://photobucket.com/gallery/user/hauge/media/cGF0aDovSU1HUDEwNzAuanBn/?ref= Guy [Hauge] on the 851/888 forum had a number of them made for members on there...
If you are going to paint the engine, you will get a much better finish if you use a compressor and spray gun instead of a brush. you could build a spray booth with extractor to get a really good finish, I`m sure building instructions will be available on the internet. Also, the paint finish will be better if you completely strip the engine and have it blasted. Could do the frame at the same time, be a shame not to. Just saying....... Don`t forget to fit the new fuel pump relay
Was just about to say that.....took mine back to the crank cases and had it cerakoted....18 months on and no flaking atall. A few before and afters...
I really don't want to split the engine, but I may get the frame painted, should i get it wet painted or powder coated?
Depends on if its a keeper i suppose - long story short - getting the engine split was probably one of the best things i did as it highlighted other problems.... 1. The paint (obviously) 2. Main bearings were a known failure point. (changed) 3. Chance to get the replacement crank balanced (much smoother afterwards) 4. Gave me the option (which i took) to do some light head work (bit more of everything without sacfricing reliability) And, piece of mind....i know its all good now for a good long while....
Think i've come round to the conclusion of splitting the cases, where did you get it ceracoated and did you have to remove all the bearings?
