Starter Motor Removal

  1. To remove the starter motor on the SS you have to take the engine apart as the mounting bolts are accessed from inside the engine! Who's idea was that?

  2. Service at the same time, as you need to let the oil out, as I found I needed to do after it was too late:mad:

  3. @Mr. R , I am such a twat. You are quite correct. The Haynes manual talks about removing the crankcase cover, not actually splitting the engine apart. When will I ever learn.

  4. .
You don't even need to do that, I replaced the alternator casing gasket on one of mine by leaning the bike to the right against a wall to prevent the oil draining out.
Don't forget that one of the bolts holding the alternator cover on is hidden behind the front sprocket cover.

  5. In my defence the engine was on the bench, I I just didn't think about what I was doing!!
