Hi Guys, had to put on a new gasket on my 2009 848 for the starter motor, no wonder the local garage didnt want to do it!!!!! what a bull ache of a job just to get to the gasket, anyway my problem is that when i torque the 3 bolts holding the starter motor on to 10 newton i miss read my torque gage like an idiot and over torqued the top bolt to 20 newton and now the bolt will not nip up tight instead just spinning, my mate who is a car mechanic says as the bottom left and middle right ones are fine i should be ok, any advise from you guys, many thanks
Aren’t the bolts for the starter motor inside the crankcase? If so, sounds like you may have stripped the thread - if so, what’s to prevent it coming undone and falling into the crankcase with potential serious consequences?
Many years ago when I was a young lad and lack of money induced bodging I left a bolt out of a car starter motor it just twisted and jammed I really wouldn't leave it. Sounds like you need a thread insert kit to sort it
Hi Ricky, thanks for the reply, i see what you mean but i dont think the bolt would come out as its threaded all the way in but just wont nip up and it has thread locker on it, all i am worried about is if it would leak oil as this the reason for changing the gasket was because it was leaking oil, cheers
If it were my bike , and a "keeper" , I would put the strongest flavour of thread-locker on that bolt then hand tighten it to the point were it just starts to lose grip ( forget all about the torque wrench ! ) . Leave it over-night , then check if it doesn't budge with gentle hand pressure ... .... and rest assured that the thread-locker will get harder and harder over time . I don't know about the 900 engine , but from 916 to 9xx engines , only one bolt requires the removal of the LHS engine cover ..... but that means oil-drain , umpteen bolts of differing lengths , and coolant draining as well ?? ..... I can't remember . All because of one bumba-claat starter motor bolt !! On the other hand , if we have to go through all of that drama , just to get at one starter bolt .... ....it doesn't really matter if all three are inside the casing , does it Hey thanks for that one Ducati
Knowing how automotive cut every 1/10 th penny, if Ducati did not think it was needed the bolt would not be there. Rethread to be sure IMHO ("Time-sert")
