Went to start bike last week ( 2002 st4s ) it ran then died after a few seconds, tried to start it again and it would turn for a fraction of a second then stop. Sprag issues would suggest starter kept going so I reckon it's the starter. What do folk think? Battery is less than year old and good.
Before you condemn the starter ( or the battery ) make sure all the terminals on the main leads are good - i.e. free from corrosion and giving a good connection. That includes the leads from the battery to the starter solenoid, from the solenoid to the starter motor, and the earth leads. Is the stater solenoid clicking when the engine fails to turn ? That would indicate either a drained battery or bad connections.
I've just been through this myself and thought it was the started solenoid, however after jumping the battery directly to the starter I've established that the starter is at fault. Got a new brush kit from Wemoto and will fit it as soon as I get home from me hollybobs. A
Sounds like the starter is getting sticky. Try applying a live feed directly to the starter to see if it turns over.
