Somebody probably knows the answer to this: Are the sprags the same on all models? Or are there various different parts on different models?
Not sure Peter, but I can tell you that last time I checked the KTM LC4 sprag is the same as that fitted to the carb 900SS(and hence the rest of that crankcase range?) and is half the price of the Ducati part. I have the part number somewhere, Alec at Ducati Proteam fitted one to my Baines Imola for me. Mainly because I don't own a puller!
I found this on another forum: "KTM 640 LC4 free wheel part number 58440026000 is an identical part to Ducati sprag (part number 70140011A). I have sucessfully fitted this KTM part to my 1995 M900 with a two wire alternator (blue painted) About half the price!"
it would be good to know - I have used Electric Starter 525 EXC 06-07 (item 13) before now and I believe this is common to many early 2 valve/4 valve. It's to suit (approx) 68.25 mm Outer Dia /51.75 mm Inner Dia with 8 mm wide rollers. The one i'm looking at is made by Morse - a 'Freewheel' clutch of the overruning variety - shame there is no part number.
I have found 7 different part numbers; 701.4.001.1A : Paso 906. 907ie, Carb 900SS, M900, 916, 748 etc. Basically all the single phase alternator models 701.4.007.1A : 900SSie, M900ie, ST2/4/4s, 748/916/996 (3-phase), 749/999, M695. Most of the 3 phase models up to the mid 2000's 701.4.008.1A : 848/1098/MTS1100 701.4.019.1A : ST3/ST3s 701.4.023.1A : HM1100, MTS1100 701.4.024.1A : M696, M796 701.4.035.1A : MTS1200, Diavel Confusing isn't it
I have today bought a KTM part no 58440026000 from KTM dealer in Croydon, for £58-32 including vat. It certainly is a sprag clutch and it looks roughly right. There are no markings on the part like manufacturers name, code no, dimensions, etc. I'll try it in a Pantah engine in due course, to make sure it fits.
Thought i'd let you guys know, sprags have come down in price from Ducati. Just got one for an S4 and it retails for £53.86. 70140411A
I have now checked the KTM sprag clutch against the Pantah engine, and the answer is no, it does not fit. Sadly the KTM item is too large in diameter, both internal and external, so I will have to try again.
I have tracked down a supplier, Ringspann, who offer sprag clutches (freewheels) in a variety of sizes. As far as I can tell the one which should fit a Pantah is a BWX1333379 so I have ordered one today. It costs £88 including VAT and p&p. Will see whether it fits and works in due course. Complete Freewheels, Housing Freewheels, Basic Freewheels, Integrated Freewheels, Internal Freewheels, Cage Freewheels, Irreversible Locks
Ringspann efficiently sent the part I ordered, arrived today. Apparently made by Borg Warner. The sprag clutch fits perfectly, looks exactly like the old ones, and seems to work, though I have not actually used it to start an engine. Solution found to that particular problem, it seems.
You also need the flange and starter gear. You pretty much have to replace all 3. I know that for an 1198 this set of genuine ducati parts costs £346 inc VAT.
Hi Pete - I fitted the KTM one to my 750SS, no problem. It is in fact identical and by the same manufacturer which IIRC is Renolds; but is half the cost of the Ducati one. The KTM part 58440026000 can be used on Ducati Supersport carburettored bikes which are fitted with the Ducati part 70140011A (900cc, 750cc, and 600cc) and probably many other Ducatis ie; Monsters and injected Supersports. If you get the KTM one you will find there is a circlip / lockring on one side which is discarded. AL
