My 900SSie has always been a little interesting to start but as a race bike it is no issue having a dummy battery pack ready to plug in. It got worse despite doing the usual earth check, high capacity starter leads and refresh of the starter motor. The spur gear between the starter motor and the sprag gear is mounted on a steel post with no bearing and relies on oil being available at all times. the spur gear was tight on mine when I stripped the engine the other day. When I removed the gear there was signs of gaulling. Probably from the once or twice I've dropped the poor thing on track. So found a suitable and very thin needle roller bearing cleaned up the post and had the gear machined to take the bearing. Now the gear spins like new.
