Starting Getting Harder?

  1. 1098 27+K miles it was getting to be difficult to start. So I doubled up on the cables and thought I’d try a Shorai battery
    It improved a bit
Reading horror stories about Shorai type batteries decided to fit the Shindengen reg
Anyway bike started ticked over coughed and stalled
Before I locked the garage I pressed the starter and after 2 goes it started
Next day off to work on the bike. It started warmed up set off up the drive and I stalled it. Wouldn’t start
Used another bike after work tried starting it turned over as lazily as it always has no start
Stripped off the bodywork and connected the diagnostics
Fault on coils and CPS. Fuel pump was priming
Changed the fuel filter and the relay for coils and pump no start

So thinking about it if the CPS is faulty that woul affect the coils and injectors so I changed that still no start. Changed the coils still no start
I checked the voltage drop across the battery when starter was pressed went down to 10 and a bit bought a new Yuasa battery no change
I wedged a bar across the solenoid and still no start. Tried jumping and it made no differenc

Anyway I got a starter motor and sprag off a bike that had only done 4000 miles
    That cured it
If your big V twin is getting hard to start and it’s done over 20K put new brushes in your starter motor and change your sprag clutch.
It appears KTM sprag clutches are the same as Ducati’s without Ducatis premium price
New brushes for the starter cost 30 quid
I have a set of new brushes so I will refurb my original starter and look into the sprag from KTM
Even from new the starting circuit is on The limit I'm sure others will have different views but I reckon now that if the bikes done more than 20,000 miles I would refresh the starter motor and sprag before looking at other things
A poor starting circuit drags down the volts and amps and is likely to throw up spurious faults

  2. I'm afraid not. My brush set I got from Electrex. Did lots of googling while sorting it. It appears Ducati sell brush set for around £30 ish and I believe the brush sets are common to most Ducati Starter motors
I haven't done any research on the sprag clutch yet I got the info about the sprag being the same as a KTM sprag from the Ducati MS site
