Starting Issues

  1. 2005 749s won't start - again! Last time it was the fuel pump relay, now replaced.
This time I'd taken it for an hour's fast road ride then, when leaving my mate's house about 3 hours later it fired up as normal but died after idling for 1 minute and now won't fire at all. The battery is good, starter lead kit was fitted a couple of years ago and the lights all go through the right sequence. I can't see anything obvious so can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

  2. Could be the relay again - when was the last time you replaced it?
Or, could be the fuel pump wiring loom where it enters the tank. The wires can break within the grommet and cause starting issues.
Does the pump prime when you turn the key?

  3. The relay was a very recent replacement but I'll check the wiring. Is the only way to check for the pump priming to listen for the whirring sound? That does seem to be absent...

  4. If the pump makes a noise then it's not the pump wires.

  5. When my pump wires went it was intermittent...and took time to fail completely, hence I was stripping and assembling over and over until I took the advice on here to change that common failure point.

  6. No sound from the pump: I've pulled the tank off and inspected the wiring. No sign of any problem at all but I hear what you're saying. How do you replace that wiring section though?

  7. You can't see where the wire is broken, it's encased in the sealed grommet that goes into the pump baseplate.

  8. I have one those in my draw from my old 749, it was working when it was taken off as it was the actual pump screwed from storage.

I’ll test it tomorrow when I have chance, you can have it for postage and a small donation to a charity of your choosing?

  9. Thanks, you're a star! How do I get payment and address details to you?

  10. Let me be sure that it isn’t faulty, I’ll test tomorrow for you.
