so chaps. After some spirited riding, the 1299 shakes it head quite a lot even at higher speeds. I've concluded that the base model damper is useless to the point where if I'm tucked over in a fast corner and open the throttle to accelerate, the front starts to shake like a mild tank slapper just starting to happen. Gonna go for an ohlins, anyone else experienced this?
I can't comment on the 1299 specifically but the 1199s has the same ohlins steering dampener I think and it still happens although not something I've had happen in corners so it must be better than the stock one. It doesn't get worse, it's just a rhythmic slow tank slap at around 110-130mph when pushing hard which is scary the first few times but fine once you get used to it. You just need to learn to relax your grip on the bars as gripping tight makes it worse. It's the trade off for the sensitive steering that the bike has.
If it was me, I would be looking at suspension setup firstly before changing the damper. Is the bike still on the factory settings? Are you significantly lighter or heavier than the average man on the street? Only if it still shakes it's head with the suspension properly set up would I consider fitting a better damper. You say that it does it on the power out of corners, so I would be looking at the back of the bike to see if it is squatting too much.
Just had a very bad case of the slap ! Over taking in a straight line 70 plus was nearly throw off. So bad my legs came off the pegs and bashed the fairing side ! I have taken the damper of and not alot of resistance on this standard unit. It's the first time and maybe the last time it will happen. Some roads are so bad these days, could have been that ...
Yep. Standard damper is too weak. I fitted an Ohlins adjustable unit and was able to use full throttle where ever I liked, regardless of road surface.
