Steering/parking Lock Not Working On My 1098.. Any Ideas

  1. My Steering/Parking lock is not working on my 1098...

Any ideas what could cause it to not work, how can it be rectified?.

    Is the function fused?

So to confirm, when I attempt to turn bars to the left, try to turn key to the 'lock position' I get no joy... Don't won't to give if to much pressure as it feels like the key will snap :(...

It's never worked since I've owned it... , previous owner had it setup for track, so had no fans or headlights on etc, all wiring had been capped off & since I've put if back on the road both fans & lights, indicators etc have been fine.. Only thing that's not working is this bloody lock..

  2. If yours has the adjustable steering rake and is set to 23.5 degrees (rather than 24.5) then the steering lock no longer works in that position :upyeah:

  3. has the bike fallen on its side at any point? the lock tang may be bent. re-adjust via the screws on the lower yoke.

  4. Not that I'm aware.. Will check the screws you mentioned

  5. No idea if it's been amended..

Not sure you I'm going to check, but will give it a go..

  6. My tang bent a bit when I was knocked over on mine. Next time i had front fairing off I belted it with a club hammer and drift. Sorted.

  7. It will be the lockstops ..... A 3/4mm Allen key grub screw with a locknut. It's restricts the steering lock side to side. Look down at the bottom yolk & you'll see them.

  8. Just re-reading your post, it could be I have not understood clearly as looks as though you cannot operate locking pin rather than steering lock failing to work (which is the case with 23.5 setting as the pin merely misses the moving parts when steering turned.) If the lock barrel is the same as the earlier types then finding the locking position can be tricky at the best of times - you have to depress key against a springing action and then apply pressure anti-clockwise (you already know) but sometimes you have to allow key to rise very slightly before it is possible for key to be turned to the locking/sidelight position.

  9. Cheers @Chris will take a look tonight or 2moz when I'm back to see if it heeds a little hand. Do u think its worth spraying some WD 40 down keyhole to help or is that a bad idea?!

  10. it certainly won't hurt applied sparingly : ) also - study key for wear and distortion as could be a factor but unlikely if you can select ignition position easily.

  11. It will be the tang and the adjusters.

  12. Cheers @bootsam if you've get any pics of what the tang is & where to find it, that would be great. As currently I've no idea what your going on about ;)

  13. I just googled it and found this. You can see the tang and the adjusters clearly. This one has had a shunt too. :)

  14. Thanks buddy... Will see if I can see it 1at without having to remove the front nose cone off

  15. Just use the adjuster screws. You can reach them down either side of the dash. Look down and you can see them. Dead easy to adjust. 5min job. Honestly.

Sort the tang out later whenever youve got the front off some time in the future.

  16. So to confirm, adjust both screws on each side inwards a fraction then test to see if they catch & steering locks

  17. Turn bar to the left as far as it will go, then loosen off the adjuster on the right until you can put the steering lock on. Leave a bit of play (a tiny bit) and then tighten the lock nut. BTW its an allen head on the screw. I forget the size.

Oh unless its been mullered like the one in the picture.

  18. don't put wd40 down the lock, use graphite powder if you can. the wd wont do any harm just the graphite is better.

  19. Can you lock it with the bars the other way?

  20. @bootsam no idea, just force of habit gets me to turn it to the left.. Will give the right & confirm back..
