  1. Had my Panigale for 8 months now and done 1,500 miles. Still smokes when I start up. Had heard about this and expected it during first 1,000 miles but anyone had same experience and anyone noticed it stop and at what mileage ?

    cheers

  3. No smoke after 1500kms.. Break in was not as per book btw IF its related.

  4. Are you sure its smoke and not steam?

  5. Nah, mine's not smoking'. It smoked following the first start only and after that, no problems at all. The oil level was still at the upper level when it went for the first service.

  6. Can the dealer tell if you have not stuck to the recommended break in? Can they plug in a computer an tell you have over revved it? Just curious.

  7. Yep pretty sure it's smoke and not steam. It's blueish and smells of oil. Got 2 other bikes, a 749 that doesn't smoke on start-up, and a Kawasaki Z900 that does. But that old girl's 36 years old, done 30k miles so guess that's expected !!!

Must admit I have taken it gently so far so might just take Mr. R's advice and give it a good thrashing to bed the rings in, once the weather picks up. Guess that's also what PP is refering to.

  8. Mine didnt smoke when I picked her up, dealer said im one of the lucky ones. hasnt smoked ever and I havent been too gentle on the run in, rode it as hard as I liked......but kept it to the revs advised by the dash. Only issues Iv ever had were one time the "phantom engine cut" and a couple of times missed a gear when I was being a pussy with the quick shifter due to tapping it up instead of being firm. Since correcting the use of the left foot iv not had anything that I can complain.

You just need to give it a good rag and appreciate the power of this baby, she loves......no, demands it :upyeah:

  9. Mine smoked badly at first, but I did what I've always done for running an engine in... treat it like polishing an antique table. It isn't the speed you do it at, but the lack of excessive pressure. Effectively one is honing in the bores by way of a final production process and work-hardening all the bearing and gear surfaces too. One doesn't want to create molecular welding, but gentle rolling actions and very light surface grinding of any high spots on the bores. I was up to full revs on a light throttle by the time I got my first oil change at (I think ?) 500 miles... then I started using it properly. If anyone is hesitant to give their bike a thrashing, I can only suggest they change up before 8000 rpm until you are in 4th gear. This avoids the engine's 'ballistic' period until it won't easily do scary wheelies, but can now be opened up properly too. You have not finished running your engine in if it still smokes at 1500 miles. I suggest you refill it with low quality, cheap 4-stroke oil... the stuff you put in Chinese mopeds or old Triumphs and do a few hundred more miles at the sort of performance deliveries I've described to try and claw back the glazed bores you've created for yourself. Since you are still in your warranty period, I would speak with your Dealer first though... they are the final word when it comes to the crunch.
