Strange Crash

  1. A good friend had the most strange crash on a track day, I have left a lot of the details out for obvious reasons but the facts alone are enough.
Having completed his laps on a trackday he's coming into the pits, blipped the throttle changing down, the right hand bar collapsed, pushing the brake lever into the faring causing a massive stoppie and flipped him straight onto his back.
Spine and pelvis damage, thankfully all mended, he may well be reviewing his racing ambitions.
    Very odd.

  2. Not carbon bars I hope?

  3. I really don't know, perhaps it and gone down a few times before, who knows why.

  4. Or loose pinch bolts more likely.

  5. My 1198 went over in my garage. Only a quite a gentle 'down', but sheared the bar clean off.

  6. I often wonder if strapping bikes down by the bars when transporting them stresses the clip-on’s

  7. Could be that, probaly not the first time it's been over

  8. Never considered that but doubt it. The force through the bars braking from say 120 down to 30 with all the momentum of bike and rider must be more force surely? Anyone any good at physics?

  9. The metal would almost certainly bend before cracking.

  10. Or slip round on the fork leg.

  11. Bars often enough come lose. I’ve had it, you shove the inside bar for a quick turn and the lot goes!! Scary.
    Your mate was very unlucky

  12. Two piece clipons? Maybe over tightening on the bar clamps, weakening the tube?

  13. I’ve strapped down hundreds if not literally thousands of bikes by their bars and never had this happen.
The only time I’ve heard of this in 4 decades of being involved with motorcycles was metal fatigue when the pilot deemed the bar to be ok but had missed the fact it was cracked during a previous drop. That was also on track.
Said rider was actually a Moto2 championship winner who’d done his own maintenance for years. Practiced every day on the bike and simply hadn’t realised the crack was there.
Braking forces just sheered it off, sounds like your mates one gave up in the same way.
    Seriously bad luck.
Does he know if it has been on its side, whether stationary or not?

  14. No lever guard fitted?

  15. The material the bar was made from would be interesting to note. Theres some aircraft spec alloys that suffer from salt n stress related weather fatigue over time. I forget the grade.

  16. Glad he's ok.
I would like to have looked at the fracture/breaks on both "halves".
