Strange one today

  1. 2010 1198s
Been out for a ride around Derbyshire today. Got home and switched off on the drive. When I came to re-start, it kicked over (once), then the neutral light went out and it wouldn't turn over. Into 1st then re-selected neutral. Same thing. After a couple of times doing this, the neutral light stayed off and no start. Switched off ignition and selected neutral and all was well. Started up no problem.
Any ideas what was going on ?

  2. sounds like neutral switch is kaput or loose. If it was on 996 style bike i'd say it's an easy check being the only wire going into the gearbox, but i'm not so sure on the newer stuff where it is

Just had a little check on the interweb, and it looks to be a similar place, right at the back of the gearbox.
Unplug it from the loom and check the light. If not on, put a bit of wire in the loom side shorting out the pins. If either of these fixes the fault it's just switch related.

  3. Thanks.
My first thought too. Only thing that put me off that scent was that it wouldn't turn over even in 1st and with the clutch in. Wondered if maybe the start sequence (ECU ?) got confused ?

Edit: OK...just thought about that. I had the side stand down, so that would explain why no start in 1st even with clutch in.

  4. The switch was fecked on my 1098 motor.
    Not too expensive to buy...:upyeah:

  5. Is it an easy fix ? Is it the one that passes through a flexible plastic grommet?

  6. On back of engine/gear box.
Unplug the connector and remove old switch with a small spanner, then screw the new one in, tighten, reconnect connector.

No need to drain the oil...:upyeah:
