Been searching for a nice Streetfighter and have found something that is really nice BUT I have also been offered the new Ktm 790 from one dealer at a cracking price. I know this is a Ducati forum and I love Ducati’s but would you buy a 12/13 plate Streetfighter 848 over a new 18 plate 790 with all the latest tech ? ( Same price )
Personally I think that the Streetfighter 848 is still a more 'premium' item. just look at items like the Master Cylinder and the brake components and you can see it's all built to a cost on the 790. That's not a bad thing but I think it depends what you want... If you are going for the best tech you can get, then the 790 will win, but if you want something that is perhaps better built and has some 'cult' collectors appeal then go with the 848.
You know what I am like Phill, love my Ducati’s and the Streetfighter has much better parts than the Ktm which is basic everything, still does the job though. The Ducati in 3 years will be worth the same or more, the Ktm ‘maybe’ £5k. Plus the Ducati has everything apart from a tail tidy and bar end mirrors. I would need everything on the Ktm. I think I know what the answer is but just thought I would get others views. Cheers
Premium brands in any market sector never depreciate in the same way as non premium brands. And in some cases product values appreciate. I don’t think that could be said of any KTM.
The 790 will be the bettter bike from a performance perspective, but clearly it doesn’t get the juices flowing like the Streetfighter. Not sure about all this Ducati residual value hype. The KTM 990 Super Duke R was roughly the same price as the 848 Streetfighter back in 2012 and go for similar money now...
Have you ridden both? Presumably you're buying it to ride, not as an ornament or an investment. There is a suspicion on the KTM grapevine that they will bring out an R version of the 790 which will be a different kettle of fish. That'll have all the top-end parts thrown at it like the Husqvarnas and the 690R. It'll be a different price as well of course. Running cost and maintenance will be cheaper on the 790, so will parts. I don't have brand loyalty or any concept of buying premium. They all depreciate the moment you wheel them out of the showroom so it all comes down to how they ride for me. I like the 848 SF but I haven't ridden the 790 so can't compare.
Haven’t ridden either, none around here to try but I have had most recent Ducati’s, 748, 998, 749, 999, 1098, 899 + more so know what Ducati’s ride like, just a different riding position on either, Both have great reviews. .I am presuming the 848 will be quicker as it is 135hp compared to 105hp. The R 790 should be good but it’s at least 12 months + away and out of my budget.
Personally when buying a new bike it’s with the expectation (not usually reality) that I’ll keep if for a some time. While I believe Ducati and KTM depreciation is similar, clearly you will loose less money on a secondhand 848. Buy one and save up for a 1290
I won’t be spending that sort of money on a new bike any more. Prices are becoming a joke, I am getting too old and my health isn’t great hence why I want a more upright bike.
Only have an absolute maximum of £7k. It was up to £5k until I found I could only buy shite for that price !
Horses for courses. The SDR is far better equipped, has more power and is built to last. I personally like the looks but clearly they are divisive. My bikes are not garage queens bought with any worry of residual value
I rode the 1098s Streetfighter on a roadshow many moons ago and loved it. My only regret was I didn't place an order for one the same day. Never rode the 848 so cant compare the 1098 was just a complete animal and a larf at the same time Just to add nearly dropped it when pulling into the car park at box hill.
