so I was riding along changed down to second coming up to a round about then go to put it in first and the lever will not move an inch. wont go up or down bike was still running but whuring and not sounding to healthy. and clues on what gone worng. im going to phone the dealership i got it form tomorrow as its still in the years warranty they gave me. Will this sort of thing be covered?
From what you describe it could just be clutch related, but if the bike also sounds bad, I'd be a bit more concerned! Good luck and good news you have a warranty!
I'd go with a jammed selector.... would have thought if it was the clutch the lever would move, a selector it wouldn't?
This is going to sound weird but bear withe me.... On my dads GSXR a similar thing happened and it seemed that the selector had gone. Upon further investigation, what had actually happened was that where it had been sat, the bushing on the shift lever basically just corroded to the peg, meaning that it was almost seized.... Having said that I know it's a different linkage set up to the GSXR
the clutch was still working fine i managed to coast into a car park so I wasn't in the road. the lever does more a bit but that's just where it has a bit of give in to bolt connect the lever to the push rod. Did managed to speak to the dealership i got it from this morning and basically told them they are going to fix it. have the bike now about 10 months and covered around 1500 miles putting it on a total of 9700. I just not looking forward to them trying to worm their way out of fixing it
Have you adjusted the lever or push rod? I did this on mine and where I took out the slack, i'd inadvertently made it too tight. Thus changing or getting a gear was almost impossible. Once slackened and re-adjusted it worked fine.
haven't touched it and it was changing gear fine for a few miles the only thing that has happened before is when changing up from 2nd to 3rd it went into a sort of false neutral where the lever would go all the way up and down with the clutch pulled in bud do nothing i had to drop the clutch let it roll for a few seconds then go down a gear and back it and it would change fine
I have a feeling @abmatt2002 had a similar problem? Something to do with the spring in the selector Matt?
Just eliminating the off chance. My mate had something similar on his 916, twas a spring as per AliT says. I'm just emailing him to ask what it was.
i had the same problem with an srad when i changed the position of the lever it would change gear properly. iv spoken to a few ducati places and apparently its the selector return spring either snapped or gone out of place. So at least now i can tell the guys at honda where to start looking. Just hope to jebus that it hasn't funked my gear box up
Right, twas a return spring inside the casing that had sheared on a friends 916. He was doubly lucky as the part that sheared had not got amongst the other internals and mangled. He said it was also a pain to get the part. But this was quite a few years back. Other than that it was a simple fix and replace.
My guess is a broken spring on the selector. Bit of a PITA to change as IIRC to need to remove the flywheel to get at it (on the older bikes anyway) but the part shouldn't be too expensive.
that's good to hear in a way. its just typical im off the road for over 4 months and the day the bike gets back on the road after hours of work and that happens. I suppose at least now the ridicule from all of my friends is justified ha ha. The only silver lining is i broke down out side a local pub so got a jack and coke on the house
Ridicule from friends is always justified. Even if they have no grounding in truth. Thats just the way it is. But it goes 2 ways. I think its this bugger and Ive seen ads for upgraded versions.
what a bugger. some so small and seemingly unimportant can stop a bike in its tracks iv not go to start getting the bike back to as standard as possible to stop them from trying to say i caused it or void the warranty
Its just 'one of those things' Slof. No-ones fault really. Except Ducati for using a shite part. At least its a simple and cheap fix.
This happened to me when I had my 1098. Came into a corner, downshifted into 2nd and when I tried changing back upto 3rd the lever was solid, no movement at all. Now bear with me on this one as I'm not mechanic and know very little about this sort of thing but I was told the gear selector fork had got jammed under the barrel - if that makes any sense. The garage pulled it in bits and freed it. They took photo's of it and it looked like there was quite a lot of dismantling involved. They warned me it could happen again but luckily it never did. Cost me £220 to get fixed back in 2010.
spoke with Chichester Honda where i got the bike form. its being picked up on Wednesday and they are going to sort it for me
Yep I had the same problem. Selector spring sheared off by the arm. MR replaced it and smoothed off edged. Newer bikes were modded to overcome this.
