I was riding home last night and having just passed a speed camera (so I was probably doing about 40MPH) the whole bike died, lights, ignition, everything. I managed to whip the clutch in quick as the rear stepped out and coasted to the side of the road. I hit the startup switch and everything came back to life, bike started fine and was perfectly OK this morning. Has anyone else had an issue like this?
Sudden engine shutdown, yes. There was a spate of it with the earlier bikes - mine included - which was mostly fixed with new kill switches and mapping. However, it never lost the clocks, just killed the engine.
I'd be on the phone to my Dealer pronto Twin4me and not riding the bike meantime :-( As Doodle said there was a pretty common issue with bike's stalling and I'm sure I've read of at least one case as you describe (total temp loss of electrics).....the hands free ignition system has to be suspect? Hope you get it sorted quick.....keep us posted.
Dealer said they will look at it, but the buggers want to charge me 12p a mile for a loan bike! I'm going to see if it was a one off.... and keep my fingers on the clutch!
I had the old cut out problem a few times back in 2010 before the ECU update (June 2010 bike). It was always on a downward change when the clutch was in. I would be surprised if this is your problem as 1) Am older Multi would have had the ECU update or 2) Your bike is pretty new so already had the software fixes. Surely the Ducati dealer can do a quick diagnostic report to ascertain the cause, while you wait, as it could be termed a safety issue?
That's what I was thinking! I'd be happy to drop it in and get them to have a quick check but the impression I got was that I would have to leave the bike with them for 'investigation'. I rode the bike yesterday to work and back with no issues and with something that is not easy to replicate I wonder if they would even find anything. Perhaps I just went through the psychic remains of a UFO landing!
You're a braver man than me (that's one way of looking at it! lol)......imagine the bike dying again but this time mid overtake, outside lane of the motorway, in a corner........ Have another chat with your Dealer (speak to a different person.....service manager?) and if they're still not helpful maybe look at going to a different Dealer. South East? Honda Yamaha Suzuki Kawasaki KTM Victory Ducati Motorbike dealers - P & H Motorcycles and Welcome to W.M. Snell Ducati - Family owned business since 1961 ....spring to mind as quality, highly regarded Ducati Dealers ;-) Good luck!
Mine did that but I noticed it happens when the bike hasn't been ridden or started regularly or on a gear too high. It hasn't happened since.
Twin4me - did you get to the bottom of this issue. I've only just come across your post (I know it's old now!). But I've had these issues for a while now and it's proving difficult to solve. Cheers, John.
It was always on a closed throttle or when decelerating in low gears so I haven't had an issue with it cutting out at full chat. The engine would cut out, but the ignition would stay on, and I would just whip the clutch in and press the starter. Might it be a fuelling issue? They changed out the righthand switch and it seemed to cure the issue. However it has happened once since.
Ok mate, thanks for the reply. Sounds like you're on the way to a fix. It may be a coincidence, but I've noticed the last 2 times mine has played up has been when the petrol tank is full. Cheers, John.
MilovanMultistrada on another forum had the same problem of sudden cut-outs. Turned out to be corrosion in the kill switch. Replaced under warranty.
Cheers fellas, Had the switch changed about a month ago now due to a problem with starting. I have the 'dark red' one now, apparently the 'light red' ones gave problems. It's now looking like the Acumen Cat1 alarm is the probable cause as this immobilizes the fuel pump and it definitely felt like a fuel starvation problem. I'll post up the final result for any future cases. Cheers, John.
Happened to me at the weekend. They're replacing the side stand cut out sensor and the kill switch unit "just in case".
I had exactly this albeit infrequently, it was annoying especially with earplugs and quiet standard pipes (can't hear that its died) . It's not happened since I opened the front air bleed screw out a quarter of a turn from fully closed (where I found it). There are references to this approach on some of the MTS the forums, can't find the link at the moment though. Not sure if this helps, seems to have worked for me though:smile:
