Suggestions For Side Stand Lengthening - Carby

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by The Royal Maharaja, Mar 23, 2016.

  1. I recently fitted a rear shock off an ie (5mm longer) to my carby..to sharpen up the steering..

However the thing is... the bike now sits at 45 degrees on it's sidestand...ok...it's not 45 but it is too much...

So what have others done about this (I know the shock swap is a common mod) I reckon that the stand needs to be a good inch longer...Is there another stand that would fit or is it possible to mod the existing???

    Cheers

Ps...no wiseguy comments about always carrying a block of wood...!

  2. Some kind of platform on the base of the stand maybe. I wouldn't be comfortable cutting and welding the stand.

  3. I have done it.....See pics...............Want to know how?

  4. Its a steel plate (originally galvanized....door water bar) which I shaped and filed.

  5. Als method is very similar to my own where the stand was worn so I drilled and tapped a hole in the bottom and used alloy plate and filler rod to secure it to the base

  6. Thanks Al, I'll go that route looks nice and clean.... I'll dial in the suspension first as it seems I need a much thicker plate than you have.

  7. I needed 20mm on my Monster stand. I welded some 20mm plate to the end, shaped to match the existing stand.

On my 916, I bought a longer stand because the original is a cast alloy that wouldn't weld as easily.

  8. I have cut mine in half, then drilled and taped both ends, a piece of threaded bar and two locknuts and it is now fully adjustable, it's been on for four years now with no problems.

  9. I did mine because the bottom of the stand was well ground away from use, but because I eventaully fitted 70 profile front tyre, it needed a bit more lift so I also made some extra plates from aluminium approx 2.5mm thick, which means I have had up to three additional ones sandwiched between the bottom steel plate and the stand..............then I use a longer C/S screw...........I was surprised how little is needed to bring the bike more upright.

  10. Before adding bits to the stand, check for wear in the pivot bush - they're not brilliant and a small amount of wear in the bush is obviously magnified.

  11. I forgot to mention the bush..........I made a replacement using a fork slider or guide bush.............wrapped it around a socket slightly smaller than the hole in the stand, that way it ends up the same diameter.

I also gave the polished stand and the footplate extension a burst of clear lacquer, but I'm not sure if it was necessary.
