1200 Sump Guard Alternative

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Android853sp, Apr 24, 2014.

  1. Just costed replacement OEM sump guard and side plates as mine are getting a bit bashed and I like the idea of anodising them as has been shown in a previous thread. At £250 I was wondering if there is an aftermarket alternative ? Andy

  2. Cant you just anodise what you have? Even touratech wouldn't be that much! Lol

  3. Probably right Bradders but I do like to keep the bike looking nice. If I can't unscrew the 3 horizontal exhaust header studs that snapped it may be academic as the funds will have to go on drilling out and fitting helicoil inserts. Andy

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. I have the Ilmberger carbon bellypan. It's been on for 3 years and has stood up well, despite being impaled by a 9" screwdriver a couple of years back - seems the A34 has some unusual road debris.

  5. The anodised layer is so thin (microns) that every blemish will show still.........being much thicker powder coat is a much better option, I recently stripped the original powder coating I had had done on my belly pan parts, quick rub down with wet 'n' dry to take off the proud edges on some stone strikes and with a new powder coat finish it looks damned good again.
Yes an anodised surface won't chip like powder coat can but stone strikes will still 'pierce' through to the silver alloy below so with time you'll still end up with the tetley tea bag look! lol

  6. All my stuff is being powder coated for the same reasons

  7. Think may get mine done if I can find someone local. Belly pan, exhaust shield and foot peg hangers

  8. Seems a bit of a myth about anodising being durable, the belly pan on my pp is chipped to hell,as stated powder coat is a lot more durable.Coating - Redditch Shotblasting Co Ltd ,the owners are bikers and Dave owns a multi gt.

  9. You'll also get a more uniform coating with Powder as if the Aluminum is slightly different or well worn the anodizing wont cover up the imperfections as well.

  10. Surely the cure is to stop the stone chips, fit a fender extender ? My bikes done just over 4000 miles and the belly pan isn't too bad

  11. Tbh its more looks for me, and I dont have an issue with stone chips, more tarnishing from weather

  12. Morning Bradders, have you tried cleaning your bike lol:upyeah:

  13. More than I've tried riding it

  14. Anyone tried plasti dip from a rattle can ? Looking across several motorcycle forums it seems to be all the rage and is being used on belly pans amongst other things. Dries matt black and is silicon based, can be peeled off and renewed as and when with minimal effort.

  15. I might need to give him a call or email as my powder coating chap has left the business and i think they might be shutting down, just what i needed this late in to my new paint job.
