Hello all I am mainly addressing those that are either familiar with the system or have it already installed. After installation I noticed that the attachment points are not arranged very well (compared to my previous bike which had four anchor points instead of the Multi's three). The two sturdy ones (those that attach to the subframe) are kind of on the top side. This means that when the bags are attached they kind of hang from the top, rather than from a top and bottom point. This introduces some flexing of the whole carrier. Now as a countermeasure, a middle link that connects the left and side carrier is provided that is attached to the tail. This does reduce the flexing, however all that sideways motion is transferred to the tail which is plastic. I really don't feel that it is sturdy enough to withstand the forces generated from a fully ladden bag being subjected to air turbulence while the bike is doing 140 km/h. It feels like the constant pressure will introduce cracks in the plastic base either in the neck or around the bolts, fixing it to the underside. Has anybody had any experience with the system to let me know if my fears are justified? Thanks in advance
Not had any SW box's but Triumph introduced flex and movement it to their box's to eliminate high speed wobble something to do with air flow and that sort of stuff. And the Pan was ditched by the police because of high speed wobble that was thought to be caused by rigid luggage. Its possible the old engineering thing that things that don't flex will definitely crack but things with built in flex are less likely to crack.
I can understand that, however, the wobble is "absorbed" by a piece that is ... well ... plastic. And I've seen a few times too many what vibrations can do to plastic.
You can only rely on the fact that SW produce some of the best kit on the market, its fit for purpose and modern plastics have so many formats.
I had the SW Motech kit on my MTS and it was brilliant kit - no worries about strength or stability at all. Unfortunately when my bike was written off I wasn't able to remove the brackets, so I now have the frames and the bags but no fitting kit. If I had all the bits I'd have no hesitation in using them again, and I would have no problem recommending them to anyone else. Hope this helps...
