Swapping my Audi for a LWB VW Transporter Van

  1. Am having a browse again at vans, looking ahead to next year and the eternal faff of dragging bikes around to track days etc, as well as the MTB riding during the winter.

As I seem to spend my entire life hanging things off the back, roof or boot of my Audi, I am seriously just now thinking of chopping it in for a decent van. Not sure I can quite cope with a terrible one that has been used for moving rubble around all it's life, but quite like the look of some of the VW transporters.

I do still need a car/vehicle for the odd work related trip, so could do without it being dreadful to drive, or huge, or I could keep the Audi, but that would then just be more cost to park things on the road.

So, if you had a reasonable, but not bonkers budget, what would you all get? I am sure a SWB would be more practical and pleasant much of the time to drive around, but if I am going to do this then I do want to be able to comfortably get two bikes in the back, the Desmo and the 848 (can I load them on my own into a van and get them both in?), and I would like to get all my other stuff in there too without it being like a tetris packing special, so am presuming a LWB must be better?.... Would also like to get something that was pleasant enough up front to be in for long trips. I know it will not quite be leather upholstery et al and it's still a van chassis, but something reasonable with air con and decent finish wouldn't go amiss.

And in the rear, I guess it need to be lined, and I would need to fit front wheel chocks (do they screw down - into what?) and it would need to have tie down points in logical places. Are they like this in standard trim, or do you need to pay a specialist fitter to drill, tap and fit wheel chocks et al into the floor plate?

All help gratefully received. I know that there is also an insurance issue in terms of NCB from what I hear?

Pics of any good examples of two bike layouts, space, features would be great! :upyeah:

Thanks in advance guys and gals.....

  2. I recall Dave(?) had a similar debate recently? May be worth a search, ill see if I can find the thread I am thinking of.

  3. LWB way forward and 2 bikes can be a squeeze in an Tranny

  4. Oh, that would be handy Ian

  5. I sold my Audi A3 and spunked out on a flash T5 Transporter instead. SWB did it for me - I can get two bikes in it and LWB is too inconvenient for parking etc. and overkill as much of the time it will be empty in the back running as my normal family 'car'
