Swapping to a race nose cone - How to remove headlights etc.

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Fastmonkey, Nov 25, 2013.

  1. So as I embark on swapping things over into track mode I've removed all the fairings now and am left with the lights air intake area.

I have a race nose cone and a new front race bracket for the fairing to fit too and clocks to mount on. This is all a bit new to me, I replaced the fairings on my old 996s but never went all the way in removing lights etc. so have some questions

    1) where is the idiots guide to removing the lights
    2) My front race nose cone has minimal fixings it is missing the three main ones on the oem nose and replies on the mirror mounts and the 3 fixings into the upper fairings. These will be oem by the way. Is that sturdy enough ?
    3) does removing the lights cause error messages/warning lights or anything ?
    4) is the dashboard easy to remove and remount ?

    That'll do for now !!

    Thanks

  2. If it were me, and it has been lots of times. i'd remove headlight as its a few bolts and electric connectors and leave the bucket and everything else in place. Changing the fairing stay is a pain in the arse. Then fit the fairing top to that. Some race fairings dont like the rubbers on the air tubes and some have covers built in so take some time...its harder to do the std ones than the race ones

  3. Oh no errors for removing headlight

  4. Thanks Bradders, what do you mean "leave the bucket" ?

I was going to ask about the air intakes as well, not sure how they will all line up, but I need to get the headlights off to check that really........... Any clues on where to start and what to undo in what order for the lights ?

  5. Right headlight off, very easy really, 2 bolts on either side and then 2 bolts down inside under the dash. Then three electrical connectors and off it comes.

Air intake tubes are the next problem. I think that's a separate thread for that one !

  6. Think I was confusing 916 and 848 in my head...whats the problem with the airtubes? They shouldn't need to come off if you are just changing fairing, the covers may if the fairing has covers built in. They are a b'std as the little bolt inside facing out it a nightmare to get too. I didn't put it back in on mine

  7. Fastmonkey you need to clear your InBox. I've probably clogged it up with my useless PMs

Have you got an electronic copy of the early manual? It shows how all this goes together and comes apart quite handy to have.

If you don't maybe somebody has a link, but if not I can upload to WeTransfer and give you a link to get it

I don't think you'll get a fault on the bulbs but if you do resistors across the light terminals would clear it. Not sure about value but something like 100 Ohms would pull less than 0.2 amps and probably be good enough to fool the ECU
