Is it only if you use the major roads that you need one? And what is classed as a major road there? Also
Cheers, Chris. Exactly what i needed. At least you can get some decent sense out of some of the members on here.
Looks like they force you to enter Switzerland via a motorway so you HAVE to buy a Vignette. They do pop up on ebay now and again.
Some reasonable advice here -reliable source. http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/touring_tips/switzerland-liechtenstein.pdf
FYI I drove into Switzerland and back out to Austria earlier this year and I didn't bother. I wasn't thrown into jail or publicly flogged.
I live in the place and I haven't got one. So I'm illegal on a motorway. And? They are just required for motorways. Suppose you don't enter on a motorway - what are your real chances of being caught without one? Very slim. If you enter Switzerland at Vallorbe it's not on a motorway so you can justifiably say you aren't going to be using them and refuse to buy one if they suggest it. No one has ever made a remark to me. If you enter at L'Auberson the border is unmanned and you're not on a motorway in any case. So if you really don't want to talk to anyone about it... In any case, it's the most interesting road to enter the country. Both these places are near Pontarlier in France if you're looking at maps. If you enter at Geneva there's a very strong chance you'll be on a motorway. It's also a dull route. The vignette has been designed to be very difficult to remove in one piece. Not sure how eBayers recycle them. Either stump up the CHF 45 or whatever it is, or ignore it. I do cough up for one on the car (but don't see why I should pay double for the pleasure of riding a bike - I can't do both at once).
I entered via the Furka Pass route from Italy and rode to Lichtenstein. Didn't buy one either. I only saw one police car and that was in a town, Brick I think. I only used a few miles of motorway though.
