1200 Tail Light Troubles..

  1. I thought that I might as well put it in one place so hopefully when I find a cure people can find it if theirs ever fails.

The tail light broke it's mountings and was flapping around so I taped it up and headed back to the place that I bought it from, I paid a chunk for a warranty so I thought a vibration related failure (probably) would be covered. Nope, they said it was probably caused by someone leaning on it so was not a manufacturing defect.
1, it is under the tail
2, the bike has a givi top box rack
3, they wanted around £180 to replace it.

So back in the empire of clutter I find 'Gorilla Glue superglue' the packet said it had rubber in it for vibration resistance. Don't bother, it lasted a mile.

Plastic welding? I have an old gas soldering iron with a blade tip, the case is ABS plastic and I have loads of zip-ties (also ABS).... This one worked for 5 miles but then failed right next to the seams from the repair, I think some left over superglue contaminated it as the plastic in the breaks looks bubbly, like an Aero bar.

    NEXT
Proper Gorilla glue, given 24 hours to cure it did it's expanding magic and this time I dremel'd a couple of slots in the supports and put zip ties around the repair... 20 miles to get the bike MOT'd and home again and it's all good, another 20 to Squires and the glue had failed but the zip ties are doing the business.

My FINAL attempt will be some Sugru after getting rid of all the contaminated plastic, I also have a brand new light in the post but I want to cure this problem before throwing a new light in there. Just ordered it online so it will be a bank holiday project.

I seem to have a need to tinker and fix problems and it looks like this bike will indulge that.
I have laid the bike over at bugger all speed and also fitted a full exhaust but this problem started before all that.

  2. Pictures??

  3. Sugru, left to properly cure, only worked for me for a few weeks of riding and then broke again. Their argument that it was leant on is a load of bollocks. Enough people have had theirs break that it's a known issue. I'd try and fight them on it a bit and mention the many, many riders with the same issue.
My next attempt at a fix will be to do a long, angled screw from under the passenger seat or using some metal brackets to replace the plastic ones.

  4. I only took them during the Plastic weld repair...

  5. I have already ordered a new one from Ducati Glasgow via eBay for £96.99 including postage, new old stock apparently.

I will Sugru the crap out of it before fitting and see how long it lasts... I have looked at after-market alternatives and they all have the same mounting's that do not appear to have been beefed up in any way.

  6. Time for a tail tidy?

  7. Check the amount of movement in the rubber mounts that hold the complete number plate bracket on. Some people have "shimmed" them with washers to remove excess play.

This means the light has no damping and can snap the mounts, the fact that it happened again after being glued next to the repair may be the cause.

  8. mine have extra rubber shims and it still went. Riding fast over poor road surfaces just kills the lugs.

  9. Even main roads are poor surfaces, Sheffield Parkway is a prime example, 70mph dual carriageway and the surface is utter shite.

I was thinking about a tail tidy, less mass wobbling about back there but I don't think you can use normal indicators on a tail tidy and still use panniers...

My other bikes have had big floppy numberplate hangers, the STR was the most notable but here's the thing, the designer knew what he was doing, he designed the tail light to attach to the subframe, not the floppy bit... I think that may have to happen.

If I do it then I will take plenty of pictures and if it's successful I will do a guide.

  10. If it helps, here's a thread where the guy used Rizoma indicators, which are said to work better anyway. I don't have Panniers but I'd be leery of them being hard to see tucked up in there.
Ducati.ms - The Ultimate Ducati Forum - View Single Post - Evotech tail tidy install, it's a nice piece but...

My rear fender got broken off in shipping when I got my 2014. I got a fender from a forum member for $20, where he had installed a tail tidy. I just posted in a tail tidy thread and asked for spares. Now that I have it, I've ordered a tail tidy anyway. Should have held off.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  11. I'm on my 3rd rear light for exactly the same fault

    Crap design!!

  12. stop leaning on it then :tearsofjoy:

  13. Haha!

    Leaning on it ...? [emoji848]

Some dealers will come out with some proper BS

  14. I have the new light and the Sugru so will put a bit of that on there to re-enforce it a bit, also just decided to go for the Evotech tail tidy as it should be more rigid and looking at the pictures Shorton linked to it should work with my Panigale LED indicators and panniers, if not then I will have to get some Rizoma's.

I will probably get it fitted on Friday.

  15. A little update, the Gorilla glue has NOT failed, I was trying not to over tighten the bolts and over stress it so as it turns out they worked a little loose

So the tail tidy, that has not gone on either as the indicators and top box rack can't both be on, and I like having somewhere secure to leave my helmet.

I took some pics of the repairs to the original tail light and my solution to the tail tidy problem so I will upload those.

  16. I shall get myself some Gorilla glue then as it's embarrassing riding around on a "premium" branded bike that's falling apart.

I just saw a KTM 990 SMT at Bedgebury and it looked nicer than my multi. I'm actually considering trading in my more expensive multi, for an SMT and using the change to properly pimp it into a weapon.

  17. Mine failed last week. My fix in the photo. 2 blocks of nylon cut and glued in place then drilled and tapped. Solid as a rock now.
