Was just wondering if it was worth having a thread (couldn't find one already but please correct me if I'm wrong) about Multi 1200 tank ranges? I'm at 171.7 miles and the last bar has just started flashing. Most of my riding for this figure was 50-80mph with a few faster bits and quite a lot of 30mph bits. Mainly 4th gear.
Last time I filled up, I was doing a steady 80 for most of the trip and my range was showing a little over 200 miles and returning 52.3mgp
I must be dong it wrong! Mine never gets much past 45, and I tootle a lot, but enjoy it when I can....
Just returned from a 2500 mile trip to Italy on mine. It involved plenty of motorway mileage (at or just above the limit) , Swiss mountain passes as well as a day giving it bloody good 2nd and 3rd gear thrashing over the Passa della Futa. Best I got was 55 mpg and worst was 47 mpg. Most of the time it hovered around the 49-50 mpg mark. As far as tank range goes I didn't run it down to the fuel light very often but was regularly seeing 160 - 170 miles with 2 or 3 bars left. The final tankful was a heroic 220 miles with the countdown showing 4 miles left Short journeys drink the stuff with the fuel light coming on at 120 miles or less.
I picked up my S Touring on the 1st May and have put 4k miles on the clock, 2600 on the continent (two up with 32 kg baggage). During long stretches on the motorway I found that there was a big difference in fuel consumption between 75 in 5th and 80 + mph in 6th. It definitely pays not to shift up too early if you want to cruise economically (I didn't!). 6th is more of an overdrive. I found that after a fast motorway cruise on a tankful, with 0-5 miles remaining there will still be over 3 litres left in the tank. With more economic cruising there's usually just a couple of litres left in the tank when the range is down to 0-5 miles.
The best i have got to is about 150 miles before the fuel light is on. I think the bike is averaging 48mpg since i took delivery a month ago. Done 1200 miles in that time. Interested to know how you worked out how many litres were left in the tank, kev.
easy as long as you know the tank capacity (20 litres?) just brim the tank and see how much you can get in!
Generally the tank capacity as quoted is not the same as the actual amount you can fuel in. Maybe the Multi is different?
Recently I rode to Glasgow and back on a tankful. A 191 mile round trip. The LCD said I had 7 miles of fuel left, the tank took 19 litres! So the 20 litre quoted capacity can't be far out.
I suppose to be precise you would have to measure the displacement of the internal components, fuel sensor etc!
I expect 200 miles of autoroute cruising at 80, and fill up at 150 when light comes on. General riding I would get about 180 tank range to dry, but I have found that sustained speeds above 80 absolutely murder the consumption and the mpg can drop to about 20 if I stay around or above 100mph I claim the world record at 370 miles
Ragging the shit out of mine in France has seen the light come on at about 100 miles but today I've done 450 miles down to near Geneva and it's averaging 47 mpg @ 74mph according to the trip. That'll be some money for some miles then. Oddly enough the average mpg improved when it was in sports mode compared to touring even when riding at the same speed on the autoroute so not only is touring mode for pussy bitches but it costs more as well.

Somerset to Norfolk yesterday, 224 miles, was hoping I would only need a splash n dash to complete the journey but ended up using another half a tank! Might be the 85-90 cruising speed to blame there, just couldn't help myself!
Just blame the beer. I'll be worse later on because we're now in Bardonecchia and about to go and force down even more of the evil stuff  I nearly stopped to take a photo of a place called Termignon but it was too hot and I wanted to get to the hotel.
Just got back from 1100 mile 1 week jaunt down in Devon. Fuel tank range was 220. Solo with 3 panniers on. Why did Devon council decide to gravel re surface all the local roads during my stay? Every few seconds stones were shooting up into the rad. Bad council. No leaks though and Mutley was fine. Parnacot House, just outside Holsworthy, Devon are knocking 40% off their August rent prices. Superb place to stay with bike friendly parking.
Good thread....its mot the mpg thats the issue so much as the distance you have before refueling! Filling the tank is a pain in the butt! Here's some more for comparison...... Ducati Multistrada 1200S MPG Reports | Fuelly
I found the same in North Devon - load of gravel thrown on top of a thin layer tar. As to fuel consumption; it's a lot better on the 2013 model, regularly showing over 45 mpg rather than under 40 mpg on my 2010 model. I now seem to fill up where I want to stop anyway rather than looking for the next filling station when down to one bar. Steve B
