Taper Roller Steering Head Bearings

  1. Just in case there is anyone out there who might want to renew their Taper roller steering head bearings (mine managed 35,000miles).......its not so easy

    Because the tapered outer track is so thin there is very little to drive the old one out ....only about .5mm edge visible.:mad:

    I have made up a split bush driver should anyone need it I will gladly post it out, then it only take moments to drive the old track out with out damaging the headstock.
    I have made a driving mandrel to put the new tracks in and another to seat the roller race on the bottom of the stem as well.

  2. Yes that's true, it is quite thin.

    My Cat C write off (bought off e-bay on pallets...three of them!) had the whole front end ripped away and I had to take out the old traditional buggered up bearings and replace them with tapered.

    Paid £3300 for the 'mess' another £4000 to bring up to its gleaming as new look. I did write a 'blog' on the Duc+++ti site with photos, costs and problems ect, and spent most of the winter bringing it back to life. It now is far nicer than a standard Touring S, with its carbon fibre panels, powder coating and its Kawasaki ZZR1499 metalic blue livery (looks black but a deep deep blue in the sunlight).

    So many problems, with loom, electrics, clocks, wheels, panels, you name it, it was broken!!

    So £7300 for a 2350m immaculate better than new 1200S touring.......not bad :))
