Tapping.....

  1. Happy New Year one and all!!

Over the Xmas/New Year my 748 has developed a tapping noise from the engine. I assuming it's time for valve clearances to be checked??

  2. Is it "time" because it's tapping or because it's NewYear? Certainly needs some investigation PDQ

  3. When were the valve clearances last checked? I hate to say it but it could be the dreaded rocker chrome issue. I'd do as supervee has suggested and get some investigation work done PDQ

  4. Thanks chaps!

Not sure when clearances were last checked, something I've not yet done in the last 18 months I've had her. In fact,no record to say they've been done at all. As for the rocker chrome ........ :frown:

  5. Always worth checking the oil level before thinking the worse

  6. If the noise has suddenly started then it's not just valves out of spec as they only move a little over a long time and it'd need to be well out to be audible , unless something's broken of course.

Depending on the severity of the noise I wouldn't start it again until I'd done some investigating...

  7. Friend of mine heard tapping noise from his 748, just before his engined seized on the motorway. It turned out to be the oil pump. Is it from the top end or bottom end?

  8. Hard to tell really Duke but as per my previous post, I'd neglected to check the oil level. She's been fine since I topped her up.
