temperature gauge not working + bike cut out.

  1. Hi all, ON my bike-748, the temperature gauge doesn't work properly. it's been doing it for a while, it fluctuates a lot, it might be at 80 the all of a sudden go up to 100 or even down to 60. But yesterday when I was out on a ride, the temp gauge was just sitting at 60 all day long and the fan did come on as i was riding thru town. When I had my bike serviced at JHP last month i asked them to check this out, but they said it was working fine then.
So any suggestions on what it could be and a fix for the problem?
Also towards the end of my ride the bike cut out, i was doing about 6-7k revs and then the rev counter just dropped and the bike cut out, I waited a few minutes and the bike was working fine, so could this be due to the heat or something else? I had been riding for about 3 hours and was pushing the revs.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  2. The temperature sensor for the gauge doesn't have a very good connector. It's little more than a spade receptacle pushed over a nipple with a rubber boot on it. I'll put good money on it being corroded. It's on the LHS of the horizontal cylinder on the cast aluminium coolant manifold.

With regard to it cutting out, it could be a dodgy earth/negative terminal. I had a similar issue caused by corrosion in the wiring loom at the negative battery terminal.

  3. RE. the temp. gauge. I had the same problem - the sensor varies resistance to earth and where it contacts through the engine gets corroded so clean that up first.
