I have an 02 998 that has carbon fiber Termingnoni mufflers; I haven't checked the pipe diameters so I don't know if it has a half-system or a full system. I've always liked the look of the titanium mufflers. But does anyone have a high-quality audio recording of how they sound? And, ideally, comparing back-to-back with carbon mufflers? The only time I've heard an aftermarket Ti muffler was on a first-gen Aprilia RSV 1000 and it sounded incredible.
Sorry, no HiFi sound track here. But I can testify that the 50 Arrow Titanium pro racing (ref. 71123PR) full exhaust on my 998 sounds incredible, from a wicked idle to a magnificent WOT howl. A lot racier than the 45 Termi carbon on my 916. They do need a specific map, though, as with the stock map (which was how the bike was set up when I got it ) engine was not happy at all below 5000 rpm… Edit: sound difference likely due to 50 vs 45 more than Ti vs carb
I changed the carbon silencers to Ti ones on my 998S and it did sound better. Not a massive difference though.
I have Termignoni TI silencers on my 998 and agree not much different to carbon ones. The good thing is that if the wadding goes it won't burn the silencer inside as it does on carbon ones.
I've replaced three carbon tubes now and they're bloody expensive & a pain in the backside swapping them over.
From my experiences of Carbon vs stainless on my old 888 and Carbon Termi vs Arrow Ti on my 916, I think carbon have a deeper tone but the metal cans give more rasp, which I prefer.
I would have thought the biggest difference in noise would be created by the diameter of the pipes more than anything else. iirc the 998 has 45mm header pipes and was shipped with 45mm ally end cans. You probably should check the diameter of the CF pipes you have on yours. If they’re 45mm and you swapped for 45mm Ti I suspect you’d not notice much if any difference, but swap for 50mm, either CF or Ti and you would notice a difference. Don’t forget you’d need to change the ecu or get it remapped if installing larger end cans, plus the requisite link pipe eg 45/50
Not to hijack the thread, but if one was to only have the termi carbon cans is there a mileage/time interval to check or replace the internal insulation material? I have a feeling mine are 25 year old originals.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I did read them all and I'm even more confused than before..! It sounds like there's not a huge difference in "how" they sound if the sizes stay the same -- which I assume they will. Where should I measure the OD of the pipes: after the join right under the bike, right before the cans themselves, or somewhere else? The Ti set I've got my eye on is direct from Ducati and includes the ECU. I'm not sure what the OD of the pipes is; I'll try and find out. How much can I expect to pay for a link pipe?
Measure the OD of the pipes as they come out of the link piece and rise up to the ‘silencer’ , anywhere on that section is fine. Use a vernier caliper it’s the only way to get an accurate reading. Don’t measure the OD of the tiny stub at the exit end of the ‘silencer’ as that will be larger than the pipe OD. if you have a 998 the standard exhaust pipe OD is 45mm, on the 998S it’s 50mm. You can always check the OD of the pipes at the exhaust headers anyway. The Ti pipes you are looking at come with a new ecu from Ducati because they are freer flowing ie no baffles in them but straight through so the fuelling needs to be altered to accommodate this and prevent the engine running too lean, hence the new ecu. If you need a 45/50 link pipe because you’re going up in size with the replacement end cans then check on eBay or Craigslist. ps. I put silencers in ‘’ because they don’t really work as a silencer if they’re not the original ones as they’re straight through pipes with a built in heat shield and wadding around them to stop your seat from melting.
Neither mileage or age but running time. You’ll notice the CF discolouring, going blue, usually on the areas where the two end cans run closest to each other under the seat. I would think, however, you wouldn’t really need to worry about it for several tens of thousands of Km.
OK mines a 996 but I went for alloy cans on my bike, they look so much better, as for sound goes I think it's alot crisper than the carbons.
Can anyone tell by looking if this is a full system or just slip-ons? I'm pretty sure it's a full system, but I'm on the road and can't check the bike at home...
It's got the larger 50mm mid section pipe and cans so not the standard pipes with 45mm cans. That said it could be a 45-50mm mid section using the original 45mm header pipes, if so not a 'full' system, rather a 'half' system which may actually be better anyway as a full 50mm can be too big, at least on the older Desmoquattro 916/996 models, not sure on 998?
I do t believe it’s possible to fit 50mm header pipes onto the 998 engine, only the 45mm pipes. The 50mm pipes are for the 998S/996R engine. If anything it will be a 45/50 link pipe and 50mm Termis.
Well it certainly is not an original mono subframe, not that there’s anything wrong with that just something to be aware of, perhaps the angle that frame joins the main frame or the mounting points for the end cans are the culprit causing that optical effect
I don’t think there’s anything wrong. subframe painted red, looks original seeing the weld. The seat is just not sitting in his rear lock. You can see this clearly on the airbox line.
