Hello, I'm Lumbux(some call me Paul) and normally float around the SuperSport area but thought a project thread on my latest addition would be good. On Friday I left home for a 830 mile round trip to pick up a 400 SS Junior from Helens Bay, Northern Ireland. It took me 29 hours but was worth it. It took me 45 minuets to strip the bike down and load into the car. My aim is to get it back on the road for less than a grand, including the cost of buying (£575). I will post some more pictures as I go but plan is to strip down, clean and paint engine, service and put back together. need to get it into a roller as were having a new kitchen soon and need the space in the garage!! Picture is before I picking up but will add more photos as things happen. One question, I cant seem to find the valve clearances, anyone any ideas or should I use the ones for the 750 I've got??
It seems the 1997 900, 750 and the 600 are all the same........so maybe logic is applicable.........bit more research to be sure, to be sure, so it is............... I reckon....
I've only ever seen one Junior on the road, must be pretty rare. Definitely worth looking after, but I bet they'll cost as much to service as a big'un
you got a good deal there Paul,i thought i was mad doing 650 miles to get mine, wot condition is the inside of the tank in?
400 is the same as my 750, albar the engine capacity being smaller and a six speed gear box. Only 2500 made, all but 200 going to Japan, this one has come back. As for the tank, its got fresh petrol in as the owner before me tried to start it before selling, I haven't looked in the tank yet, needs a new seal round the filler. Dose anyone know if you can buy bremno rebuild kits, the rear master is looking bad, not cleaned it yet but the gator has split so might as well do the lot
Should be able to get brake service kits ok, and I'd imagine the petrol cap seal will be shared with other models too.
Cleaned the frame last night and cleaned the steering bearings at work today. Hope to get the engine washed tomorrow, ready for paint. Hope to get the frame and engine back together next week.
Small world . one of my mates was over in Ireland on a Triumph ride out thingy and he was telling me about this guy buying a 400 Ducati and bringing it back stripped in a car. Good luck with your project
you can buy a service kit i have had a front one in the past, you can buy a new rear M/C for less than 50 quid.
Bloody nice chap he was, made the ferry crossing fly by pass on my best when you see him next Ian. Well all the fairings are cleaned and polished and in the loft as not to get broken. Took me hour and a half to get the fuel filler off, those damn grub screws. tank looks good, just one small hole in it, I'll fibre glass it up and pour some resin into the inside to help stop the rot. Next is engine clean, will get this done over the weekend ready for painting next week. I'll put some photos on tomorrow.
You should be able to get some Brembo seal kits etc from Jim Aim Motorcycles at Sible Hedingham.........they are KTM dealers and a lot of Brembo parts on Ducatis were fitted to KTMs.....
your engine looks tidy compared to mine, how you planning on cleaning it? if you do a good job you can clean my engine lol.
Up date, things are getting there. Now starting on the carbs, they look clean on the inside but are really bad on the outside. Anyone managed to unsize mixture screews before??
looks good - re: unseizing, sadly you've hit on one of the worst problems to solve on our Mikunis. I have tackled over a dozen pairs now but success rate is only about 50% even taking the maximum amount of care. It's a big subject and may possibly p.m. you. Are the screwdriver heads totally trashed yet or do you reckon you could get a purchase on them had they been unseized? If marginally seized and you have managed to turn slightly (usually accompanied by a loud squeak!) then obviously don't attempt to turn anymore - it's possible that you could carefully heat up the area locally and then douse with WD etc cycling several times before trying with a good fitting screwdriver on (say) the third time while still hot. I have a set of taps for the thread but it is so fine that drilling as large as you dare and then picking out the remainder nearly always results in damaging the thread in the carb body.
I have some penetrating oil type stuff here which is used specifically for cleaning up and removing rusted screws etc from guns which have been subjected to being in a pond or in similar conditions for a few years........sometimes works just by leaving overnight. I will see if I can get some into a small container so you can try it......
