V4 Thinking Of Buying A V4s

  1. I have that familiar itch again, which means I will have to sell my 2014 1200s and my Aprilia V4 Tuono Factory 1100 in order to climb the Ducati ladder again.
So my questions. I loved my old Multi but it is kind of lumpy feeling really, I put OZ race wheels on that and what a difference in handling, but still a lumpy motor at low speeds. So I enjoy riding fast and smooth, and do love to chuck a bike around. My concern is with that 19" front wheel, both for sticky tyre options and also sporty riding. Can you fit a 17" to the front and has anyone done that yet? wondering if that is worth a go or is it actually a good enough bike to tick all my boxes, two up touring, comfort, smoothness, sportbike handling? I want to know if I can get a buzz out of taking the panniers off and going for an evening blast, the Tuono is such a great bike but wont do a long day without becoming very uncomfortable. i suppose I still want to have a sportsbike and hope that this will be something that makes you smile.

  3. The V4s in standard trim 19 front is as good as the PP don’t worry, real roads there really is no difference, on the track yes but not in reality. The PP does have the wheels , SSSA but…… depends if you like how it looks more than how it rides , the V4s is a brilliant bike and you can thrash it as much as you want and not a lot out there is better . IMHO of course . The front wheel conversion I know not of and also would not bother .

  4. You will find with the V4 engine you will need to ride it higher in the rev range to get the same feel as the 1200 , but when it goes it goes and and once you understand the way it works it a fast bike . I came from the GS 1250 which had so much torque , I originally felt a bit cheated on the low down power , but now , with the understanding of the way the V4 works it just delivers so much more . Your left foot gets a work out mind you . Can’t go wrong with the V4 as it’s a great all round with character and great in all situations.

  5. Evening,

FWIW, I picked up mine today.

after a biking lifetime of race-reps and nakeds, I think the multi v4s is as exciting and handles as well as any of my previous bikes. I haven’t noticed any detriment from the 19inch front yet. Granted only a few hundred miles in.

I may change the tyres for something stickier, within reason, maybe road 6es, before going in a track day, but I will go on a track day.

Go and take one for a test ride

  6. Agree with all that has been said by Captain. The V4S is the best sorted Multi so far for me and I came from a 1260 with a 17" front, for UK crap roads and for touring the 19" front is a better bet, initially I found it needed more of a push to get it into the corners but once there was rock solid, now I don't even notice any difference. Road tyres (such as Road 5 or 6) will improve the handling, the V4 motor likes to rev and I find that I use the gears far more on the V4 than I did on the 1260. The only downside is that if you do use the high revs it will go really quickly but will use a lot of fuel!
A recent fast ride day in Wales and I had to back off on the way back to refuel, at the petrol station the trip read 182 miles, fuel gauge said 4 miles to go until empty and it took 19.6 litres in the 21-litre tank! That was close enough for me :)

  7. You can get Dunlop Sportsmart TTs and Metzeler M9RRs to fit the V4S now.

  8. I have tried the Road Smart 4 and found it not that good , lack of feel . Will be interesting to see the thoughts on the TT and the M9rr , I will be trying the RR in the new season and will be re using the Mutants I tried and took off after a few rides as they will be a great winter tyre as they showed fast wear in the summer . Roll on the summer for the RR as feel it will be good , how long they will last will be a different matter but on paper they look good .
As you say the TT and the RR will be great for the track as sports tyres more or less . The R5orR6 will over heat on the track as it’s a more wet tyre and will suffer from heavy wear and profile degradation.

  9. I've come from exclusively sports bikes (Pangale 1199R and V4S inc.) onto the Monster 937 looking for something different not wanting fat fairings and winglets of the newer sports models but found it way too much of a departure power wise but then found I was enjoying the upright position and flat bars.

After being coerced into a test ride of the multi V4 (mainly the size put me off and my perceived expectation of what it would be like riding a heavy bike) my mind was blown and bikes were ordered. After thinking I may need a bigger garage to accommodate extra bikes for different occasions I have rapidly found the multi is covering every type of riding I do. I will concede the obvious that there is no explosive power of the Panigale but there is also no doubt that this is still a fast bike. While it won't see a track day these were always few and far between for me to even really worry about it.

Bottom line this is a very fast and capable machine whereby I ride just as fast when out for a blast (sometimes quicker in places) as I would on a sport bike just the squirts in between corners are not as fast yet no less exciting.

I don't find myself looking at it and thinking I miss 215 bhp....... ever

  10. Good feedback, thank you very much.I am going to pull the cord and go for it i reckon, second hand of course,iy's a long way up to that price mark.

  11. I’ve ridden both. The PP is a better fast road bike. It steers more accurately and turns in quicker.

I haven’t noticed any difference in regard to stability when comparing the 19” to 17” front wheel. I came from a 1260PP and both bikes are more stable at higher speeds.

The V4 is an incredibly competent motorcycle. If I did big distances, I’d probably go for the S and save money on the PP. I don’t, I ride this style of bike because I’m a lanky twat and my pins won’t fold onto a sport bike these days. Weekend blasts for me with the odd two day jaunt, diary permitting.

There’s a thread on the US forum showing the mods required to fit a 17” front to the standard bike. Not easy but doable.

  12. and what is the consensus on fitting a 17" front, does it affect the handling radically? also a lanky git here who enjoys the twisties.

  13. Probably cheaper just to buy a PP in the first place.

  14. Here's the original thread:

    https://www.ducati.ms/threads/17-front-wheel-on-multi-v4s-problems.742581/

After an initial pasting from those that alluded to know better, that lad cracked on got it done. He seems happy with the results, which is all that matters.

Point to note, the 17" isn't the only geometric difference with the PP, from memory it's longer and the rake and trail are different.

The Ducati homepage will confirm that.

  15. Owned both , if I had the choice again I would and did choose the V4s as it’s as good as the PP . Just less the juicy bits .
The v4 s and the PP are the same bike , okay it does steer faster and have the track option , but also this does create its own issues of instability on imperfect roads , the V4 s eats them with no change in the bikes character. I get the lure of the PP and fell for it , but now after 2 V4s and one PP I get the PP on perfect prestigne roads but they are few and far between the S just works and performs as well but better . IMHO

  16. But, am I’m not trying to start an argument, your PP had a major issue which is why it went back. Most of the roads I rode on are gnarly back roads, and the suspension is sublime on all surfaces. Try and get a ride on one without the issue yours had, and you’ll see what I mean.

  17. I did , borrowed a mates and found the issues were less but still there for me , I ride the hallowed ground of the Welsh roads , I knew at some point this would be the reaction , but after ridding normal one , I still had the same issues of the unsettled chassis , maybe its me pushing to hard , but the standard V4s works , and the PP is a bit of a too balanced bike that get flustered , unlike the V4s sorry ....and I do mean that as we had discussed this and do not wish to upset folk , its just my opinion. I have always pushed bikes to the limit so I only point out the flaws / positives I find .

  18. Apologies to the PP owners as I sure they will dismiss my comments as I only comment on my experiences of the two bikes . Multi75 again I have only ever been honest .

  19. There is no such thing as the perfect bike for everyone.
We are all different shapes, sizes and like different aspects of biking.
Personally if I was after a Sunday back road scratcher, it wouldn’t be a Multi V4 of any kind.

It’s just my opinion but both the Multi V2 and the Desert X are more agile than the V4 on UK roads. Weight can be disguised but you can’t just make it disappear.

  20. I think we should not forget one very obvious point when comparing the PP and the V4S, the PP comes with dedicated sports tyres (ie no off-road capability at all) whereas the V4S comes with a compromised road / slight off road tyre
Off course it will tip into corners faster and in general feel a bit lighter on its feet, the tyres alone will do that, but to get a fairer comparison I believe you should put a set of M9RR's on the V4S
Personally, I understand where the captain is coming from, I travel at a quick pace over some really shit back roads (but not dirt roads) and I feel the 19" front is probably more of an advantage than disadvantage in these situations

My guess is a set of M9RR's on my V4'S is a better combination than a PP for the area I ride in
