1098 Thoughts On Power Commanders?

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by suttz83, Jun 13, 2014.

  1. Just fitted slash cut Termignonis and the DP race ECU. Seems like its running a little rich.

Whats peoples views on getting this sorted. Power commander or I assume the alternative is having the ECU re-done on a dyno?

What have you done your bikes?

To be honest I didn't think there was a need for PC's as the ECU gets changed and thought that did the job but I've seen quite a few now with PC's installed.

I'm sure the fuelling isn't a million miles out with the DP ecu but I like to know its runnung well, so wondered the best course of action to improve it. I assume the costs are much the same, paying the shop for dyno time and the tech to tweak regardless of ECU reflash or dialling in a power commander.

    Thanks
    Ben

  2. That's going to depend on who is close to you who can do it or how far you are prepared to travel. A recent post had Bootsam getting a minor tune to solve the lumpy slower running so a full fat tune or a PC might be overkill. If I could work out how to tag Bootsam, he'd see this post but as I don't, try and PM him to see what he has to say. Andy

  3. I was trying to figure out if there was a tagging thingy on here! I'll try speak to him cheers.

I have Seastar Superbikes (Ducati and dynoject dealers) about 40 minutes from me so it's very handy for getting on the dyno.

Just want to see if it's best to re-tune the ECU or do it the PC way.

  4. I have my 996 booked into Seastar for a full custom Map. 2nd July. I fitted the power commander but the bike still needs to be set up correctly.

  5. you are better off dyno time and resetting a cpu rather than a piggy back system....imho

  7. Thanks. PM'd him.

Andyb is that from experience. I've not spoke to anyone who has done it via the ECU.

I'll have to speak to Seastar and see what they recommend.

I'd rather go thru ECU as it means I don't have to pay for Power Commander. The cost of that would pay for the dyno time. This is providing the ECU re-write is a safe option.

  8. Advantage of a PC is that all or nearly all dyno centres can connect and map one, piggy back yes but successful on many brands of bike with no problem, also you as an owner can connect to it with simple PC and software so can save your own maps for backup and or load or change them. Mapping the ECU has much finer levers of control but arguable they are not required to get a good tune, also specialist dyno opp and software are required to map the ECU, they can give you a copy of the ECU data and map in case yours was to go pop and you needed to replace it and reload the dyno work, but again they would need to do so as flashing the ECU needs special cable and software etc not a simple interface like the PC. If you have access to a dyno that maps the ECU then do so, IF you want to be able to map it anywhere then go PC, both do the same job. I do feel however that mapping the ECU should be cheaper but the cost seems to be higher from the feedback I have had.

  9. The yank power commanders are odd. Reagan was a fuckwhit

  10. pm answered.

  11. I've had both a PC3 and then an ECU remap on my 916. Power was no different but it definitely runs better on the ECU remap, smoother through the entire rev range (more adjustable/set points etc.) and I had an occasional 'glitch' at certain RPM/load conditions on the PC - plus the ignition timing can also be altered with the ECU if necessary whereas the PC is fuelling only.

PC has the advantage that more places can do it and as such the work maybe cheaper but you have to buy the PC so, if starting from scratch then price is similar. You do need a knowledgeable Ducati specialist to do the ECU remap - I highly recommend Chris at CJS racing, as do many others; CJS RACING Ducati Cylinder Heads Tuning Gas Flow Dyno ECU Custom Mapping Bristol Bath

  12. I like the sound of the ECU tuning.

However, just been told by Ducati (Seastar) it can't be done?? Has to have a power commander.

How much were you charged for the ECU tuning? I have heard good things about CJS but they are a long way away from me. A good 5 hour ride each way.

  13. Anybody know of places around the Norfolk area that would do it?

  14. me thinks they are trying to pull the wool over your eyes...........because if they dont know about ecu tuning potential then i would suggest they are in the wrong business...

  15. My thoughts too. When he was telling me, I thought it was a load of Crap but couldn't be bothered to argue with him. Think I just got the wrong bloke on the end of the phone.

I'll give BSD a look into as Chrisw has said.

  16. BSD are a well known company and were at the forefront of ecu re-flashing. Probably the best people to go to.

  17. Thanks.

I have just emailed them asking for prices and recommendations?

Does anybody have an idea of prices?

Looking at their website, it looks pretty impressive. Hopefully it'll work for me. 2.5hr ride from me so should get a good before and after ride comparison too.

Thanks this far for the advice and insight.

  18. BSD reflashed and remapped my 848's ecu. Its like riding a different bike home seriously. Cant remember how much, sorry, but i know it was worth it.

I put a PC3 on my old 1098 and was an arse to get to the top of the forward facing cylinder to piggy back the connectors - think i ended up undoing the rad and lowering it a bit.

Also - no obvious way to tell and ecu has been remapped - PC3 sticks out a mile, if anyone were to look for any reason.

  19. Thanks for the info on BSD. I do like the idea of not having to put a power commander on.

I had a reply from BSD today. The price is £450 for the re tune. Going to have to save for a bit first. In the meantime I'll get a dyno run at Seastar and see how far the fuelling is out.
