Has anyone ever successfully removed and replaced a TPS on their throttle bodies? I want to replace mine and if possible fit it facing the opposite way but the manual says it's not a serviceable part despite them being easily available. Mine is on a 999 throttle but it applies to most of the range....any views? Thanks
I think you might have to explain that in a little more detail. They are not serviceable in that there is nothing in them that you can reasonably expect to be able to repair. Any components are potted to stop tampering. "Non servicable" doesn't mean it cannot be replaced with a new one though. The, "fitting it the other way" thing is not clear.
Agreed, even if using on a non fuel injected bike the TPS is often still used for some basic ignition timing changes.
I think 'non serviceable ' means not stocked and you have to by a new set of TBs from DUk. The 1098 ones can be removed. Can't recal how though. Calling @chrisw
One link went no where, one link went here... Ducati Superbike TPS sensor - Magneti Marelli IPF2CB | eBay or you could use the CCW ones like what Ducati dealers have started to use  and the Ford Cosworth guys , and a guy from Italy with a Fiat
Most bolt on and off, the 999 one has one use clips which are destroyed on removal - it's a gentle prise and ease the old one off - you can see the clips on this new one here to get an idea... never removed one myself so not sure how much force is required...
Thanks all - been at work today and not allowed to post there so could read all this useful stuff but not reply. Sooo, I can remove the original but it'll destroy the clips - not a problem as I have a replacement part, it's a standard Fiat parts bin item so easy to get hold of. ;-) I haven't taken the old one off yet so can't work out if it'll go in the other way around or not. Ah so why am I doing this someone asked - well my 999 has two throttle bodies but of the pair the one with the TPS is the important one. So, when I lopped off the rear cylinder for fun to make a single cylinder I only need one throttle body. The problem is this now needs to become the front throttle body and keeping the cable routing for the throttle in the same place to avoid using custom cables means that TPS is now at the front right of the airbox and even with a new hole and rubber recess fitted in the airbox the TPS is snug against the side. When I plug in the loom, the connector wire is bent back over tightly so if I can put the TPS in 180 degrees rotated, it'll face backwards and the loom plugs in at a wider part of the airbox - no bent wires or tightly packed connectors! But before I went and trashed a throttle body I wanted to know it could be done so thanks for the info and experienced support (finm and exige for the detail!), it's much appreciated. I need to get a nice FIAT jobby now and have a go...
If the TPS is OK then don't remove it. You need to reconfigure the wires in the Connector. You need to swap the 5v supply and the output voltage wires over. The TPS will then work as on the 848/1098/1198 that is mounted on the front throttle body.
Ignore the last post. I was trying to remember when I built an intercept cable foran innovate LM2. The wiring outputs are the same on the 999 and the 1198 but it is the rotation of the potentiometer that differs. On the 1198 I seem to remember high V = closed throttle and low V = wide open. Shouldn't post whist on the beer waiting for the rugby to start !
Well that's that question answered! I can get the old TPS out and fit a new one but not 180 degrees turned. The throttle body shaft is slotted one side only. I could take the shaft out and rotate it 180 degrees too if it wasn't for the throttle cable pulley being pressed on so that just won't be possible. Even if I could turn that 180 degrees, the TPS has a locating pin that only has one position in the throttle body itself. So, long and short of it is, I can't turn the TPS through 180 degrees and I'll just have to put up with squashed wiring! Now....how to cut off and replace injector pipe!
Wiring outputs ARE NOT THE SAME on a 999 as a 1098. Learnt this when I built my 1198 in a 999. And no, the tps can't be rotated as it is keys in position. If you are running a single throttle body there is no reason why you can't clock it in any position on the manifold, it doesn't need to have the cables or tps running from the left or right.
The wire outputs ARE the same and in fact terminate at the same ECU pins E3, E29 and E32. The difference is that the ECUs are configured differently to interpret the TPS voltage for throttle fully closed and throttle wide open. As the TPS is on the rear TB then the rotation of the TPS gives low V as throttle closed and high V as throttle wide open. On the 1198 the TPS is on the front TB so the rotation of the TPS gives high V as throttle closed and low V as throttle fully open. I need to do some searching as there was a OZY or NZ guy who did this single cylinder conversion on a 999 engine and was able to get the TB and TPS to work.
