Topbox options

  1. I can't believe I'm actually asking this questions but after almost 30 years on bikes I'm considering buying a top box!

My reasons? Mrs Twin used to come out on the bike with me but after a number of sports bikes lost the interest. With the new Multistrada shes 'considering' coming out with me however she would feel a lot more secure with something behind her back.

When I bought the bike it came with a Givi rack fitted (which I removed), so I was considering one of the smaller Trekker cases, maybe the 33Lt size. However I still hate the look of the rack and box when I'm riding on my own and whilst the box is quick to remove the rack was pretty fiddly.

I've previously used the Ventura system on my Tuono (which was brilliant and fairly quick to take off and put on), but they want over £200 for the brackets and luggage rack for a Multi.

So, is there a more attractive or easier solution? I don't want to spend big bucks as I'm not convinced her interest will be sustained yet! What I'd really like is a box (or box and plate) that fits directly and easily onto the Ducati rack.

Does anyone have a picture with the Givi trekker bag on a Multi?

  2. Thanks for the suggestion but Jesus that's hideous!

I'm not saying I'm against a topbox for touring, but I just want to be able to have a good looking bike without the box and frame for 'normal' everyday use.

  3. Have you looked at Hepco and Becker? There mounting plate looks like a rentec sports rack and provides a better grab rail when top box not fitted, and there top boxes are mainly all black with a coloured lid you may be able to get to match the colour of your bike.

  4. Don't feel so bad Twin4me it comes to us all in the end.

I have fitted a Palmer Products rear rack which enables you to fit most sorts of topbox's. Ended up buying a cheap one as I don't intend to use it very often it's just handy to have if the need arises.

  5. I am going to fit my old GS box on sometime on a homemade plate, but in the meantime I am just using a waterproof roll bag, amazing what you can get in them, two straps and your off, clothes are bone dry on arrival, this months ride magazine is doing a roll bag comparison, worth looking at, cheers.

  6. Its not my cup of tea either

  7. Not a cheap option but for anyone who doesn't need a full size top box this is neat (GSessories TailGunner), the mounting plate is quick and easy to fit/remove. Available in various colors to match bikes....

  8. Just came across this by chance, nice machined ally topcase mounting plates made by a multistrada.net member (here) and available on eBay

  9. Now I can see this working as it would be easy to put on and take off (and doesn't look too bad if I left it on the bike)

I was looking today to see if I could fit the Givi rack without the side supports, but the mounting bolts are pretty difficult to get to...

  10. I said the same but have found it REALLY useful on my treks to and from work. The laptop goes straight in and completely waterproof... Doesn't seem to affect handling that much at all... I've the standard Ducati one... Oh and when i had a slight white van man incident it really saved the amount of damage that happened...

  11. Jeez thats getting a bit harley davidson... they'll be selling the backrest with tassles soon!!

  12. I'm thinking of getting a big top box for touring with her in doors. Don't know what to get. Won't use it much other than on the odd long trip so struggling to justify the cost of the Ducati box at £401.

Any thoughts on options? Palmer products rack @ £80 + SW Motech 48 l @ £125 maybe? (back rest £30)

Does the standard Ducati top box (part number 96785810B) include everything necessary to fit to the MTS? Is it easy/quick to remove box as I think I'll only use it for touring.

    Any other ideas appreciated

  13. That Dynamic option is neater than the Palmer products version, but I think I still prefer the Italian rack with a topbox/backrest

  14. I think you and I are on a similar wavelength. What I want is something I can easily add to the bike for a 2 up ride, and then remove easily without it looking like a dogs dinner when the box isn't fitted.

  15. Yeah the Ducati box looks the business but if I'm only going to use it a few times a year it's tough to justify. I guess it includes the base plate etc. do you know?

    What's the Dynamic option?

Wonder if anyone else has any other ideas?

  16. See a couple of posts above this.... nasty looking backrest (the Palmer products one is worse)

Perhaps we should start a hire scheme for the Ducati top box and share it in between!

  17. I would save up the cash and get the proper Ducati one if you can. Its well made and looks as good as you are gonna get. I've found it to be completely waterproof and doesn't seem to affect the handling much at all... Any on fleabay at all??

Not cheap but then you're open to look for second hand Givi Monokey top cases........I've watched the few Ducati MTS1200 specific cases that have come up on eBay recently one went for £390 (red) and the other £342 (white)
