Hi Guys, Anyone's other half complaining about the topbox pad digging into their backs. My missus is about 5` 8" and the topbox pad digs into her back by her kidneys. Just wondered if anyone had swapped out the pad for a different type. we will be trying it without the pad fitted at the weekend otherwise I may have to design and fit something, can't have her whining in my ear every time we go out especially in July (WDW). Cheers
Yes mine has especially when she has a jacket with back protector in it Not tried anything else, just told her to stop moaning lol!
My Mrs hasn't moaned about it yet but now she's bound to Good job I'll be running a much louder exhaust from here on in then
Earplugs should solve the problem without unnecessary expense. It's only when you start getting a pain in your kidneys that you need to start worrying about it...
My better half has spent 4k miles on the back of my 2013 Multi with Ducati top box and she hasn't complained yet. I'm not going to show her this thread though. She did complain last week when I took her out without the top box and she nearly fell off (snigger!).
I've just come back from Brands Hatch (900 mile round trip) with the wife on the back she didn't complain once about the top box, but I did feel I was sitting to far forward on the bike to give her some room. I'm looking into a way of moving the top box bracket back an inch or 2 just for the extra bit of room. Also I think she likes the top box on, she never complained once when I popped the odd wheelie, and I an have Autocom fitted to the bike.
Today I decided to look into moving the top box rack back. So I nipped to B&Q and bought some 20 x 4 flat bar and a few bolts, although I didn't use the bolts in the end I found a stash of torques drive stainless steel bolts nuts and spring washers. It turns out the rack is held on with 6 shoulder hex head bolts which I used to screw into the top of each of the brackets. and the ss bolts to screw the brackets down to the bike, I may paint them black at a later date but I'm off to the NW200 in a few days so I'll use that as a test before I commit to painting them. I threaded (M6) the top hole of the bracket to receive the original screws. and drilled the bottom holes 6mm clear. I've moved the rack back 50mm 2 inch in old money, I recon this will give us the extra room on the bike. I hope the upload hears some pics,
Be interesting to know if those brackets stand up to high speed solo riding? I have a Givi Trekker 52 on an SW-Motech metal adapter plate, without the OE support arms and have noticed an "ever so slight" bending of the SW plate, after it "leaves" the rearward Ducati fixing points. Caused I think by wind pressure from 3 figure speeds tipping the box backwards?
I'm hoping it will, My 21 year old son sat on it yesterday and it didn't budge. he was joking if I put a cushion on it we could go out 3 up.
Nice job. My concern would be not how strong it is, but what effect the weight further out the back of the bike will have. to me the MTS with top box on or off feels no different. On my ST4S where the top box was way out back (relative to rear wheel) the bike was really affected by cross winds, so much so that we stopped using it. Fingers crossed it works for you, and will be interested to hear how (or not) it affects things.
Yep I hear where your coming from, but I'm hoping with my upgraded rear shock. that the bike wont lose any posture on the road, I know now that with the top box further back and the wife and I being able to sit further back it may make the front light but I don't think that moving something 2" further back will make to much difference, even if my wife says 2" is a lot. I'm hopping that the Skyhook will compensate and try to put more weight over the front, but I bet it wont. I may have to drop the forks through the yoks a few mm to pull a bit of weight over the front if it doesn't. Time will tell, I'll let you all know when I get back from the NW200 next week. It's only a 5 minuet job to put it back to it's original position so no biggy, it's cost me a mornings tinkering and a few £ so no loss if it doesn't work and hell you have to try these things or you'll always wonder.
Hey jcmental, just wondering how your top box bracketry turn red out? Both from a pillion comfort standpoint and structurally?
