So who has done it? Any drawbacks on the 821 models? How do you carry luggage? Interested in views of those who have done Euro tours. I really fancy a Hyper ( maybe a new 939 SP) to replace my Multi in the spring but it needs to be up to solo Euro tours.
I used to tour on a Harley Sportster with throw-over saddlebags. The Oxford expandable type carry loads and can be strapped on safely with a bit of planning. Not too expensive and transferable from bike to bike.
I found those and am considering them. It is the fact that you can remove most of it in few seconds leaving a black bracket so when you back no fluffing about. SW-Motech Blaze Pannier Saddlebag Set Ducati Hypermotard 821 13-15 incl.support | eBay
Uh as per screen do not do motorways and you will not needed. If you do go motorways get a screen kind off like on hyperstrada. I bought this bike to stay away form m-way traffic so no brainer for me.
i've manage to fit 2x20L Kreigas and done some mild touring, nothing in Europe (yet) but you can get a ton of gear in those Kreigas, more if you're prepared to shoulder a small rucksack too. I try to stay off the motorways, but when i have to, 85-90 is perfectly do-able, even with no screen, at those speeds you have to fill up every 1.5 hours anyways, so good time to rest.. did 600 miles in 2 days just after christmas (right through the middle of Frank :/ ) about 5 hours each way, combination of twisty A-roads and M-ways, could have honestly managed another couple of hours.. i don't think 500 mile days are out of the question...
Reckon the biggest restriction would be tank range. If everyone else you are with can get 130 miles and you can only get 100...
While I agree that you do not need screen for short touring trust me longer journeys it's a must. Went to Poland and back on monster 695 no screen. Off m-way was good for first 4 days but even that got tiring.
We did Europe on sports bikes with Kriega tail packs. We had a 999 that was only getting 100 miles to a tank. Very annoying and one very close shave. Kriega tailpacks were faultless apart from one dumb Arse melted his on his under seat exhaust. One other rider had to overtake ME and flag me down as my luggage was on fire and held on by the one last strap [emoji23]
LoL Bradders I just realised something if everybody can do 130 and you can a 100 that means everybody carries spare fuel for you so do not worry if you run out siphon from their tank a bit each
The motorway porridge is not particularly pleasant on any bike, but a small screen is definitely worth while. Also 100 mile tank rang is perfect for a bum rest and stretch. I strap a bag to the back, what fits is what goes. However if you have planned accommodation you can also post packages at several locations. And then do a return post when leaving. The cost is normally cheap enough and far better than carrying a tone of crap of such a lovely flikable beauty ;-)
I recently did a 4000 mile trip on my hyper(Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and home), fuel stops were around 120-130 miles, did around 3-400 miles per day, used a kreiga rucksack, was comfy and its more than doable, this year ill be doing it on my F4 again which is not bad either comfort wise.
Can i ask you Musno, i see someone said that even though tank holds 16ltrs you can only use 14(?). Not sure how he came to that conclusion. How many ltrs it take when you topping up & have you ran it dry to see what mls you get ?
What I need to know is how you are able to do 120-130 before stops. On stock exhaust I did 100-110 miles before reserve, town, spirited riding or motorway. With new pipe I do 85 in town, 110 spirited riding and motorway. Each time reserve comes on I get about 12l in.
Touring on my Hyperstrada last year i saw 150 miles from one tank when I wasn't pinning it everywhere and that was with my bulky 6'5 frame and paniers, obviously when I arrived at the twisty roads it dropped about 50 miles of that range.
